Today I thought i would invite you godless heathens to get a head start on the weekenders Click here---> [agnostic.com] to come to my shop; I've got a place for you to sit, a sharp pencil and a pad.
This was helpful to me, since I didn't know the names for much of what is shown in the diagram. What I was referring to as "edging" is what my former husband never attached, or had attached, once the roof was replaced: fascia, soffit, gutters, and drip edge. And, of course, he made sure I'm in no financial position to address these issues, and I get bats and insects in the house as well as lots of drafts. I'm wondering how long I will be able to stay living here before this affects the value of the building, if it hasn't already.
Facia is a very important part of a roof. There are roofs that do not have facia but these days with modern construction that is quite rare. Not having facia on a roof is an open invitation for numerous critters to get in the attic and to have maybe too much ventilation in the attic. This can also let excessive amounts of moisture in the attic and that is not recommended.
One thing though. Generally speaking though the fascia should be in place and there shall be a metal drip edge attached to that fascia and roof decking BEFORE the shingles go down. The shingles will hang over that drip edge by about 3/.4 of an inch. The very best wood you can use for fascia is calls Smart Trim. It can be pricey but it is fantastic stuff and won't rot.
I have great concerns about your situation if I understand what you are telling me. I would appreciate if you would take a few pictures and send those to my Home Repair Rx group so I can continue this issue there. Click here > [agnostic.com]
