I don't know how to sleep anymore. Its annoying because I still have to work. Don't tell me to put the phone down, I've tried.

Oh that's not good.
When you find out the secret to sleep, please let me know too!

I will, I am sure its not a good idea to drive without sleep

Can you provide more information on your situation?

Yes. More details please, including everything that you're trying and what exactly happens when you are laying in bed and trying to sleep.

I don't know. I am always on the go...should be skinny but I'm not.

Even with sleeping pills?

Sedative meds are not good for you

@Amisja ex gf is an rn and uses sleeping pills prescribed to her.. if the choice is lack of sleep every night or medication?

@hippydog All sedatives are contraindicated to long term use. They are addictive, quickly become less effective and for benzodiazepines the withdrawals are potentially fatal. I never px them for longer than 2 weeks.

What have you tried and what is your bedtime routine? I assume you've checked into articles on sleep hygiene. I find meditating prior to bedtime helps. I have some other suggestions if you want.

I am rubbish, drink too much caffeine, answer emails late at night, worry about my kids and my students. I do everything wrong, I just expect that if I wake at 6am, I should feel tired!

@Amisja What are you willing to change? Generally people don't change until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. What point are you at? If you don't change something, things WILL stay the same, can you live with that? No judgement intended. Some of us are very stubborn.

@HippieChick58 Caffeine and sugar are going on friday

@Amisja That's a good start. I drink some teas that have some mildly sedative or relaxing effects from time to time. They do seem to help. Melatonin helps sometimes. Alcohol is useful. My fall back is Benadryl, and sometimes even that doesn't help. I try to turn off my phone (or just not use it) an hour before bedtime, and I meditate before I try to sleep. I cut all caffeine off at noon.

@HippieChick58 Good thinking

@Amisja It comes from WAY tooooo much experience with sleepless nights. I've been meditating seriously enough to call it a practice for about 4 months. One of the things I find is if I focus on breathing, and count one for a breath in, two for out and so forth, I rarely make it to 20 before I fall asleep. That doesn't mean I stay asleep, but it is an improvement. But I'm also walking 5 miles a day and getting other exercise, I'm physically tired at bedtime. When I start working again I know that will change and hopefully the sleep issues won't get out of control again.

I have a hard time sleeping but I've found a secret formula for me that knocks me the fuck out.

  1. Have milk and cookies before bed
  2. Take my prescribed sleeping pill
  3. Have sex

After these three things I'm gone through the multiverse. Too bad there are holes in the process. ?

I can't take a sleeper and none of them are recommended for long term use.

@Amisja I'm sorry.

@MrChange Don't be sorry. By the way, a quick glance at your pic, I thought you were sat on the loo #needtowearmyglasses 😉

@Amisja that's why I got lasik. Lol

Maybe you are on US Eastern time, as it is only 8:43 here.

I am in Britain

@Amisja I know. We are five hours earlier.

i am an insomniac too, and suffer from sleep deprivation. when i do sleep, i don't get delta sleep, so it's as if i never slept. i do occasionally achieve unconsciousness. this is how: i play the initial game. i pick a set of initials and think of as many famous people as i can with those initials. sometimes i vary it by thinking of famous people with a certain first name, or first name with a certain initial, or even all the countries beginning with a certain letter. you can improvise. it's engaging enough to keep sleep-preventing real-life thoughts out of your head, but boring enough to put you to sleep.

Put the phone down.

I really wish there was an eye roll emoticon. I'd give you one... lol

@Wildflower ?

I don't even take my phones into the bedroom. That problem is solved before it starts.

@darthfaja Thanks! I guess if I was on the app, but I'm not. Cute.

@DenoPenno yeah agree. Sleep hygiene is important.

On any night where you're dog tired and sure to sleep, count backwards from 100. Eventually when you are tired, you count backward from 100 and you've trained yourself that it is a trigger for sleep.

Headaches sometimes keeps me up. Pain meds help with that.

For ordinary insomnia I just think about naked people. I don't know if that will work for normal humans, but it works every time for me. Something about the prospect of sex bores me into unconsciousness.

2

I'm sorry. I know how miserable that is.

TRY THIS PLEASE.
go to youtube and try to follow Queen's gambit decline ( trust me any chess video should help you get bored enough to fall asleep)
It is just an experiment so please try and report back.

I have a bedroom TV. It bores me to sleep and later i wake up and turn it off with the remote.

I was going to suggest something but it looks like you're pregnant? I might have some tips but sometimes there's not much you can do no matter what.

Pregnant? I'm 52!!! I'm just fat

@Amisja Oh, crap! I was reading other comments and thought they were you! So embarrassing....

@Meili I'm flattered! I am old enough to be a granny 😉

Tried any of the sleep aids? I take two(2) 10mg Melatonin tables for a good night rest,getting up once to pee,and back to sleep.

If the problem is that you can't relax, try this breathing technique when you're in bed: press the tip of your tongue against your gums right behind your upper front teeth, breath in through your nose on a four-second count, filling your lungs, hold your breath for seven seconds, then exhale through your mouth for a count of eight seconds. Repeat several times. You should feel yourself relax within just a few breaths, and that should lead to sleep shortly thereafter. I find this technique also helps when I'm feeling anxious or upset, helping me to relax and calm down.
