Hawaii has a bill that will legally prohibit adults under the age of 30 from buying cigarettes within less than a year’s time and ban all cigarette sales in Hawaii within five years. Do you think it has a chance to pass?

Picking on smokers only is not the answer. Obesity kills just as many, so why not ban red meat, junk food and soda as well? Perhaps add extra taxes for people with elevated BMI. None of these things work. People are responsible for their own health.

Yes, but food is something that is necessary. It's true that some people abuse it but it has a reason to exist. Cars kill 40k a year but they have benefit. Cigarettes have no beneficial use and cost society billions each year. The rest of society has to pay for the health care of those who choose to damage themselves with this addiction that has no beneficial purpose other than to enrich corporate owners.

@rogueflyer people with genetic predisposition to a vast array of diseases do the same. The fact is if doctors can make excuses to not treat people based on their decisions which directly led to their injuries they wouldn't treat anybody. Again, people are responsible for themselves. Cigarettes are already taxed to death as a deterrent. guns which are made for nothing but killing people are freely available for all

@Kojaksmom Genetic predisposition is not a preventable choice. I think it's a matter of "where do you draw the line" and how many people is this affecting. In reading the comments listed here most people wish they could quit or were never enticed to start. I do appreciate your opinion though.

@rogueflyer people with genetic predispositions choose to have children.

I hope so. Maybe other states might follow.

My thought also.

No. I am not a smoker and would love to see a reduction in smoking here in Hawaii, and I would likely vote for it, but I do not think this bill will pass.

It is nice to get this idea out there for other states to consider though, or to give it a try. Hawaii is a good first choice for a bill like this, since we have a natural border, where we can largely restrict things coming in.

There are valid concerns of reducing tourism, which is more believable than increasing it, as some project. I would love it if all my clients and neighbors were smoke free, but that is a dream that likely won’t come true.

Smokers stink

Some people say fat people stink too.

How did the Volstead Act work out for the U.S.? That ought to give a hint on how banning cigarettes would work out for Hawaii. How did passing laws on the mainland that prohibited selling cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18 work out...did it keep teenagers from getting cigarettes and smoking?

Wanna use the most addictive drug on the planet? Open tobacco dens for those over 21. By that age one might realise what a stoooooopid choice this is.

Sounds fucking great!! ??
Smoked for 19 years and I’m not even 50 and I already feel the damage done and honestly I believe that if someone chooses to smoke then they’re insurance should be higher than mine and that they and their families are blocked from suing the tobacco companies.

I hope it does. I’m so sick of smokers and their disgusting habit. Cigarette smoking has continued to decrease as vaping has become more popular. That’s another problem altogether.
Cigarettes are a fire hazard and the filters are not biodegradable, not to mention the health effects of tar, formaldehyde and nicotine.
Will it effect tourism and how could it be enforced?

Another 'Prohibition' law. Good luck with that.

Yah, pretty soon they'll be prohibiting baby porn and assault. Being snarky.

I am not a smoker and think it's an absolutely disgusting habit. There is nothing good about it at all. With that said, people have a right to do what they want as long as they aren't harming others. If folks wanna waste their money on that shit, fine. Just don't do it around me. I disagree with banning sales of products. Agree with another commenter here; prohibition never works (including the war on drugs, which I don't do either).

Having quit smoking several times before I quit for good 30 years ago, I'd say confirmed nicotine addicts aren't going to quit without a fight. I admire the intent, but I think they'd be better off sponsoring voluntary stop-smoking programs.
