I hope all this stuff is harmless

It’s a fair question... the amounts of radiation in the air only seem to keep increasing.

Check the date on the article. He's already received approval for over 11,000 satellites. He recently requested permission to launch a million, which is pending. The project has been in the works for quite a few years now. The first batch of satellites is scheduled to go up this year.

Color me embarrassed. Still very good news all in all.

@Anonbene - Nothing to be embarrased about. I'm a bit of an Elon nerd. I'm looking forward to this, as well as 5G home internet to give the shady cable companies some real competition. I figure in the next couple years, my home internet service will either be from SpaceX or T-Mobile. I'm fine with either option.

@davyjones
Is 5g just another wifi provider that will charge an arm and a leg for people that can reach it?

It's a million Earth stations that will communicate with those ~12,000 satellites. I wonder how they're planning to bridge the gap from Earth station to end-users. Is it to be an actual wifi-based network?

@Anonbene - No, it's the new cellular standard that's in the very early stages of deployment. Current cellphones are on 4G standards, which stands for 4th generation technology. 5G is just the 5th generation standard. It will be comparable in speed to the faster home internet services currently available & the plan is to offer home internet service as well as regular cellphone service. Most major cities should have it by the end of next year & it should be pretty much nationwide in the next 5 years or so. Linked is a good article that explains it in more detail, if you're interested. [pcmag.com]

Thank you Dave. I read that and didn't understand a word of it. ?

@Anonbene - Lol, sorry. In a nutshell, competition is coming. Internet prices should come down in the next several years. ?
