Yeah, and now, a bunch of republicans are trying to move legislation that would require anyone taking an oath to say "So help me god".

I agree, that is the way it should be. I would only use "so help me god" if I were really swearing and for shock value. I'm not looking for an imaginary god to help me out, that day has passed, ship has sailed, grew up and got smarter.
