Passing an old man on the way to the shop this morning, he said, "Have a blessed day." I asked him to explain what he meant and discovered that he couldn't explain it to me in terms that an atheist could understand. This is probably the wrong site to pose the query but can anyone here explain it to me?

It's a platitude, they don't need to be understood by the speaker of the receiver, they are just said and heard with the understanding that since the other interlocutor probably knows what it meant something pleasant has just happened.

Life is full of such pointless moments.
