I love it...Vincent Ingala and Brian Culbertson are my current favorites...going to see Boney James at the Berks County Smooth Jazz fest in April in Reading, PA...

There are so many good musicians that have made this genre appealing to many...

I do like Jazz...i guess some smooth Jazz but not really as much. I'll tell you HATED what they called Jazz Fusion. I went to The Blue Note in NYC with my then husband and another couple. Dudes were loving the jams and Gals felt like we were in a torture chamber. It was so disjointed to me ..noise. Just my opinion.

Not trying to be insulting to anyone, but smooth jazz to me is for people who don't really want to listen to the music and want it more as background. Nothing wrong with that, I do the same thing with other types of music, but I am a jazz musician. Straight ahead jazz is something that takes a little more active listening from the listener. In general I don't enjoy music that sounds overproduced for a genre meant to be heard live. The whole point of a mainstream jazz performance is listening to the interaction of the musicians and the realization that this is a one time performance; you won't hear this exactly the same again. Or as the drummer Shelly Manne put it: "We don't play a song the same way once." So the jazz recordings I prefer are of live performances.

I am a musician also and listen to most genres of music. My upbringing in R&B causes a need to bop my head so smooth jazz provides progressive music with a beat. Many people who appreciate a bumping groove minus vocals like this genre.

Yeah I can listen to it. And live jazz, too.

I date myself by saying that I am a cool jazz lover. I have had the privilege of seeing Eolla, Brubeck, Paul Desmond Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ray Brown in live performances. I also really liked the music of Ahmad Jamal and the blind British pianist (can't remember his name).

i love jazz but smooth is not my fave kind. that doesn't mean i don't listen to some that's... well, i don't know if it's borderline or what, but let's just say my jazz listening ranges from miles davis to john coltrane to alice coltrane to jan garbaarek to billie holiday to ella fitzgerald to julie driscoll to jaco pastorius to chic corea to sugarcane harris to.... well, i don't think you can always peg them, but let's just say my VERY LEAST favorite kind of jazz is what at least used to be called fusion (although i do take credit for getting yutaka yokokura on the radio for the first time).

If you are a guitar fan, I would like to suggest Gypsy music for you listening pleasure.
As a starter try this:

@jlynn37 Thanks for posting this. It's amazing. Just what I was hoping for from this post. Loved his voice speaking French too.

As an aside and to mix it up a bit, listen to this toe tappin' boogie woogie.

Here is one of my go to YouTube channels for smooth jazz:
THE - SMOOTHJAZZ - LOFT Channel

One of the Amazon Prime music stations I listen to is smooth jazz. Really don't pay attention to the artists names but enjoy the sound.

I too enjoy the music and not necessarily the artist.

2

Yes. My favorites include Sade, The Rippingtons, Craig Chaquico, Keiko Matsui, Acoustic Alchemy and Lee Ritenour.

2

Miles, Coltrane, Brubeck all yes, but i still hold that smooth jazz is a contradiction.

So where would you place it? What would you call it? It does stem from straight ahead jazz.

@IAJO163 I call it Kenny G and group it with Justin Beiber. No offence. Or "elevator music"

Oh yeah. KCSM

Yes...! Are you going to post some music? Love to hear it.

Possibly. I'll seek out some of the artists I listen to. Do you stream TV with Roku?

@IAJO163 No...just post something from YouTube,...or if you tell me what you like I can find it myself.

@Marionville THE - SMOOTHJAZZ - LOFT channel.
Just do a search.

@jlynn37 Nice info...will listen in to some of this later! I didn’t know about them. I just wanted to know what type of jazz IAJO was into...it’s quite a broad genre.
