Marijuana & Meth.
Boy, what a day. Early this morning 13 of us sat in a county court hearing to state our objections to a large (level 3) marijuana farm planned for the north end of Lopez (we had to take the ferry to the county seat in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island). While waiting at the terminal the local owner of a high end B & B (built by the actor Tom Skerritt – and whose marriage ended in divorce over the stresses in the building process) in the village showed up with a horrifying tale. At 4 AM Sunday he was called by the manager of the B & B that there was an active break-in, in progress. He got dressed and drove to the building where he was met with the local police with guns drawn. A known meth dealer/user had broken 4 windows (and cut his foot so there was blood) into the building and terrorized guests. It was Valentines weekend and all the rooms (7) were full with couples wanting to spend a romantic weekend in a quiet place. At one point the robber pulled the fire alarm to get a couple out of their room (and notifying the fire dept.). The room where the person was determined to be, the police broke in and found the guy hidden in a closet with both a gun and knife (which he used to break the windows). The guests of the room had locked themselves in the bathroom where they hid, naked, in the bath tub. The guy was arrested and is now in the county jail and, coincidentally, he will be arraigned today and the owner was asked to testify and he just happened to be at the courts with our petition.
Almost nothing is simple and getting a license to grow marijuana is an extreme case in point. Many facets of this proposal were shown: using vast amounts of water from the well will cause salt water intrusion which has become a problem with wells near the sea, distances from things as school bus stops (which there are 2), neighboring houses and on and on. One thing discussed was whether this operation should come under the heading of agricultural. On the way back we discovered this very night there is a meeting by the county Ag group to declassify marijuana as an Agricultural product. It is not for direct consumption and should be classified as coming under the dept. of alcohol and Cannabis. Almost 400 locals have signed on to protest the permitting of this farm. The recent criminal activity only highlights the sort of thing we want to curtail.
What a story! It simply does not seem like a good idea on that island to have a cannabis farm.
Cannabis is a natural plant, and it is harmless. If you heat the buds(flowers obtained from the female plant), it will become activated and have some THC which is a mild drug....... but you can never die from an overdose of Cannabis...... even if you smoke it all weekend long. It isn't very addictive either, much less than tobacco. Now, you don't want to give it to children..... not while their brains are still developing, just like with religion...... no child should be scared into believing in ghosts and devils. Wait until they are eighteen, and then you try to scare them.
Just because a person does not die, does not make it harmless! My 53 yr old son got ejected from the army over marijuana use, he has made an almost failed life, along with many of the friends that he grew up with have also had difficult lives (some are dead), and they started with weed back in high school.
@Freedompath So most of the harm was caused by enforcement of the legislation. Look at Tommy Chong and Snoopdog..... or Bill Maher. Cannabis alone is relatively harmless.
@DaveRoss I have read the research, it is not harmless! It is a drug. Drugs work on the brain. Your choice, one good example is not Scientific!
@Freedompath Those people are 3 famous celebrities who have each been using cannabis on a daily basis, for many decades.....& they all need their wit and charm to make a living......... It's a natural substance and it doesn't harm your brain. My only advice would be to read more about it, and don't appeal to ..... because they never even knew about the endocannabinoid system when the govt. banned it.
Cannabis is a much safer drug to use for pain, and you can not die an overdose..... and it's quite a nice substance to use if you just want to relax.
@DaveRoss I studied the Science, a few celebrities proves nothing! It effects the brain...sure from the inside, you can’t see what people on the outside observe about your nature and behavior! Many an alcoholic functioned just fine, it appeared...but not really...case in point, the founder of Coca Cola, who left his property in Atlanta to AA!
Have to disagree with you on this one Jack. CDC is the future. Medical marijuana farm?
So do you think this industry should not be regulated. Cannabis farms have a big effect on the community and, through this process, I have seen how it will affect this community. It is a drug and has negative repercussions if it is not regulated. I recently posted a link to report in the Atlantic monthly about all the problems producing this product can bring.
It is also legal in Canada but there are strict rules for trying to bring in or out of Canada.
People only see the end product and have no idea of the problems that the production side can cause. Remember, there are many people that think guns are sacrosanct and there should be no regulations on them.
