Is anyone here as terrified by CRISPR technology as I am? If you aren't familiar with it, it is a revolutionary technique for genetic engineering. Its use has exploded to almost all areas of research. The Chinese have even done some testing on human embryos.
As someone who has a personal investment in any sort of gene editing technique due to its possibility to fix my hearing or at least fix any child of mines hearing I'm all for it. It has an almost unlimited potential to do good, and an almost unlimited potential to do bad. Nuclear energy and AI are in the same boat.
You can't put the genie back in the bottle. We should have reasoned and intellectual discussions on the subject with educated and informed people from all aspects of society. But this cannot happen in the current climate with antiscience and evangelical people in control of gov't in the biggest player on the planet. The potential benefits of CRISPR are immense but the risks are significant as well. We will see both in the years to come.
