As a parental father figure,Old Testament God does not appear to like children very much (or uses their suffering to threaten their parents to obey him...).[thebricktestament.com] Are we parents supposed to use God as a role model? I have always found this as an odd example to model a healthy parent child relationship.

In my opinion, if you are one who could/would believe and accept such irrational and unsupported nonsense, then you most likely would be a parent and a person that would do exactly that, as many believers demonstrate every day.

Are you kidding? Look how he treated his only son! What a dick.

Oh but remember...somehow that was still god

Yeah, I also heard that in the book of Romans, God made one of his kids drive to the convenient store to get him more beer when he was to drunk to do so. That sounds like terrible parenting and I don’t think we should follow that model.

I think any parent using "GOD" as a role model has some deep and serious issues - but not necessarily their own fault; too many people have been raised with religion telling them what to do, and the cycle continues... I have never viewed the xtian god as benevolent, not kind and nurturing in any way. The xtian power has always been through the use of threats and promises of hell and damnation for so-called bad actions. Or the promise of some mythical "heaven" for well-behaved children. I preferred to show my children by example what I thought was the good way to live. I have three very well-adjusted, contributing, and happy adult children. I like to think that I was able to raise them well without any religion in their lives; morals and ethics, definitely, but no religion!!

Yes, I agree. It's as if the best parenting style may well be the opposite of these examples in the Bible. I am also the parent of two adult children who were raised free from religion.

No do not use god as a role model. if you do your kids will end up in prison. teach them your own values and ethics in accordance to reality

There is a book that gave examples of how to live 'biblically' that came out about 10 years ago...[challies.com] It would be ironic to have a book that showed us how to parent 'biblically', tongue in check...not serious but satire. Of course it would have to be written by an atheist and or comedian. (ha)

I think that people project onto god whatever their experience of fathering is. If they had a good father, they see god as that good, loving, strong but tender father. If they had an authoritarian, controlling, shaming father, then they see that in god. And so on.

In other words they have an ideal of fatherhood and project that onto god, and cherry pick the parts of scripture that support that projection.

What I’ve noticed is how quickly children pick up on someone reflecting reality ..as opposed to what appears to them as make-believe behaviour expectations. Makes them a lot easier to be around, too.

There’s nothing even remotely resembling ‘a god’ having the least effect on our existence, or theirs. The sooner we, as parents, reflect that ..the sooner our children focus on the realities of life..

Talked with my youngest this after noon ...I did good 🙂

I identified reality from fantasy way early in my childhood. I remember thinking to myself how utterly ludicrous it all was when we were assigned to read the bibble. When I tell my grandkids they don't have to believe in any god or the accompanying b.s.,they look relieved, laugh nervously and look over their shoulders for their parents (they go to church) lol

@Freespirit64 Exactly 🙂

The OT god is not a good role model for anything. He was a jealous tribal god and in some scriptures his name comes out literally as "Jealous."

I didn't know that!

"Dash their brains out against the rocks." Not great child care I think.

The very example I mean to give: a threat to do this, or actually doing this "as a lesson" is the parental role of an angry, vengeful god. Very Old Testament...very much a capricious supernatural authority figure.

No

Personally I can't use that which does not exist as a role model.

If he drowned teenagers once in a while, he would get my vote.

2

If this God did exist CRPS (Cosmic Racial Protective Services) would have removed the Jews from his care and placed them in the care of a foster God for their own protection after the garden of Eden fiasco. Who leaves the tree of knowledge unlocked let alone let's the kids play in the same room with it when the gods gone to the store for smokes?

The same problem with Zeus and the box he gives to Pandora. These gods are just not suitable carers or guardians. I ask you, makes you long for the days when the Nephilim roamed the Earth. At least you knew they were probably BAD unlike this conditional bullshit from the Abrahamic lot..
