St. Patrick's Day was not celebrated where I grew up, along the coast of the North Sea in Germany. As a child, I was fascinated with the story about the monk Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland. My cousin Renate set me straight one day: " We East Friesians won't have anything to do with the Irish. They constantly sent monks over the sea to convert our people to christianity. So we fought the monks whereever we found them. The worst one they sent was St. Boniface. We killed him, and then we ate him. So, if somebody comes to your door to convert you to any god or religion, you just tell them not to bother. We still have a bone of St.. Boniface's in the cupboard."
I was very impressed by her story and have used it many times on unsuspecting fanatics.
By the way, Ostfriesland was sold out to the pope by her chieftains who were promised more power and land. Ostfriesland was the last Germanic area to convert to christianity.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

I heard a lot of 'stories' about the Ost frieslanders from the Germans in the South. They weren't very nice. So that part of Germany is religiously opposed to the ones in Bavaria.

Yes, if you talk to the hard core Frisians, they do not consider the Bavarians to be real Germans. I will not repeat the specific saying. But language has a lot to do with it. Frisian dialect and Bavarian dialects are as different as Norwegian and Italian.

@Matias Vielleicht nicht für Dich, aber ich wohnte für eine kurze Zeit in Schwaben und hatte nie ein einyiges Wort verstanden.

@Spinliesel And the Swiss German is like super Bayarish.

@Matias Maybe like a New York dialect and on from the Southern US.

Frisians are cows

Yes, they invented black and white cows; also a breed of milk producing sheep.

@Spinliesel Sheep as well. don't see them around here. Mostly Scottish blackface.

@Moravian East Frisian Milksheep, they are now all over the US and Canada too. I grew up on their milk. Scottish Blackface , a nice medium wool. i think used for making tweed fabric.

@Spinliesel And tasty lamb chops

It's good to learn about any angle of the story, no doubt. For me it's just about having fun and wearing a green T-shirt to work tomorrow for no reason at all 🙂

He couldn't have been very tasty, he was 84 years old... kinda grisly.

Made him part of the fish stew??? Who knows.

Probably made some good glue as a bonus.
