Reasons for not hating those who disagree. Because either they are right and I have failed to listen. They are wrong and I have failed to teach. Or we are both wrong, and we have both failed to learn. But whichever way it is, some of the fault is mine.

I recall having to use the phrase "We'll just have to agree to disagree on this subject" if it got too heated. When two stubborn people disagree, it's important not to resort to insults...that much I do believe. And don't we all just want to be heard? Even if a person disagrees with us? Failing to listen is part of the problem. Gwen Ifill (PBS newscaster & journalist) was quoted as saying something helpful on this matter that I often try to remember: "Cynics think that they know all the answers already and then they stop listening. Skeptics always have more questions to ask. Skeptics are willing to be persuaded to the honesty of an alternative point of view even if we don't share it."
