I will be satisfied if my epitaph shall be written thus: "Here lies one who never rose to any eminence, who only courted the low ambition to have it said that he striven to ameliorate the condition of the poor, the lowly, the downtrodden of every race and language and color." Thaddeus Stevens

Does it really say “striven”? Shouldn’t it be “strove”?

A rather self-righteous sort of guy don’t you think? He with the ugly frown fought hard to have the evil southerners executed, stripped of their homes, disenfranchised, or driven out of the country.

Those "Evil Southerners" where doing far worse to the slaves they held. As for grammar back then, who knows, language is ever-changing, and, who cares . . . . it does not take perfect grammar or syntax to make a point, and if someone misspells something it is not a crime. What is a crime against humanity is supporting slavery, and I am with him 100% on that, fuck them if they are indignant for the way they are treated when they support enslaving other humans!
