One of my dearest friends is on life support today and his systems are shutting down. He is not expected to survive the week, if even the day. Losing a close friend hurts so much, losing a friend to substance abuse hurts even more. I am struggling to make sense of the senseless and be helpful to his family but from so far away, I just feel helpless.

Life is so fragile and precious. Don’t waste it, not a minute.

Learn to dance. Learn to bake, learn another language. Connect with other people. Speak your mind and live by your own rules. Try not to have any regrets at the end. Above all, do good and make the lives of those you love just a little bit easier.

Been there. Losing people we care about hurts so deeply. Be kind to yourself during this time.

It is tough to know that you can't save the people you love ... they can only save themselves. It is one of life's great ironies. I'm sorry you're going through this.

Thank you.

(It's hard to ''like'' this post) I'm so sorry your friend has come to this. And so sorry for you and everyone else who cares for him! Take his legacy to heart!

Thank you for your empathy

Great post / thoughts. Grief is one of the most difficult situations we experience. Especially when the loss is even more traumatic when you lose a friend to substance abuse. If you summarize all the grief books the number one way to deal with the pain is to share.
Take care!

Good advice. My younger daughter's friend died from a heroin overdose in NH several years ago. Hard losing a good friend. 26 years ago one of my best friends in college died of AIDS. Still mourn his loss.
