How many on here either have decided to abandon major social media platforms (FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) or never joined them to begin with? If so, what were your reasons for doing so - privacy concerns? Too much narcissism in those environments?

Love connecting with like-minded activists on Facebook. Hate their heavy handed gatekeeping, even more so that my participation puts money in Zuck's pocket. They label political speech "hate speech" when discussing apartheid Chosanistan, but provide zero details when asked for.

Very Kafkaesque.

"How many fingers, Winston?"

I keep Facebook to have an eye on friends/relatives that live far away. I rarely post. Facebook lost it's shiny appeal awhile ago....

Abandon? I never joined! I have a phone and text message. Good enough.

I'll have nothing to do with any of those, and you couldn't pay me to have anything to do with anything to do with Mark Zuckerberg. I figured him as a grifter a decade ago.

Once upon a time, I was a facebook nerd. I got tired of the 'If you believe' and 'Pray for' and 'Post amen'. Not to mention, I am sorry, but who cares what your dead fish, deer, car or truck looks like?

Social media is a pain in my ass. I'm on FB but use it, maybe, twice a week for ten mins at a time. That's it. I tried Twitter and found I had no use for it at all. Never bothered with any of the others. I believe this is a result of my generation. As a baby-boomer, I had none of this until the last 10 years or so at most so it's just not that critical to me.

I'm sure I'd feel very different if I were a Millenial.

I'm 34 and am no fan of those platforms.

Social media is bullshit. If you go against the grain and speak out against the establishment you will get banned.

Right. No one posts photos when they're having a bad day too.

FREE FREE FREE
I abandoned Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter 3 years ago. I never had Instgram, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit or Flickr or any other social media. I am free from all.

However, I used to make a living doing social media campaigns for businesses including PPC on Google, Yahoo and Facebook intensely and am very familiar with most tricks of the trade including fake news and ads.

Somebody said one line that caught my attention;
"When you get something for free, you are the "product'."

Please know it is true about Agnostic.com also. Our profile features, e-mail, habits, preferences, topics, likes, dislikes are collected and marketed. No one does this for free.

I never joined Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Tumbler, Pinterest, Reddit, etc.

They are a massive time-suck.

@BeerAndWine

I still have a Facebook account.

I saw an item on a TV show this evening called Mediawatch. They highlighted the amount of fraudulent click bait ads that are promoted on FB. Too shonky, too stupid. It makes this arrogant intelligenci feel ill. As for Twitter, Instagram, et al. I have no idea what they are!

1

Was told to do Facebook to promote my business, never got so bored in my whole life.

Me too, same with LinkedIn. Couldn’t engage withFacebook as I could never be bothered with it. You watch a few exchanges between people and it soon turns into a shit fight! Not for me. I don’t care enough about the colour of lids for peanut butter!

I only do face book and I think they need to be fined and regulated I don't do other shit face bok keeps me up with pic of great grands far away

I was on fakebook for a while but closed it 4 years ago due to threatening behavior from another user. I was suspended from twitter for telling Mike Pence he was a liar and I hope that he ends up dying in prison. I also don't want to help zuckerberg make any more money than he already does. He stole the idea for fakebook from other people, and he steals information from everyone who uses his platform to enrich himself. The only social media site I use is this one.

Never joined Twitter or Instagram. I don't need to know every thought everyone has at every moment.
Never been a big fad person in the first place. I mainly use Facebook to find old friends and keep up with those who are scattered across the planet.

I think it stops counting as a fad when your user count goes over 2 billion (Facebook).

@jerry99 maybe not as long as there are articles saying people aren't using it anymore and are going to the newest thing.

@lerlo Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded. Yogi Berra

@jerry99 they all start as fads. The question was did you even start them. I didn't because I don't do fads. I gave my specific reason for Facebook.

I can't remember the name of one social media I left three decades ago. It was barely functional and I kept getting messages asking me if I wanted to pay to join porno sites. The ads were so frequent that it was becoming difficult to exchange messages. Searches for messages groups was likely to turn up the first 102 inactive groups.

Got kicked off and banned from Facebook. I'd said a true Christian is a fictional character because nobody can point one of those rare creatures that never sin out to anyone.

Left AOL chat rooms because it was like swapping bumper stickers. I think I'd have the same experience with twitter and that's why I haven't joined it.

Dropped pen interest because it seemed like it was mostly stuff to get me to buy other stuff and look at the drawings of failed artists. There didn't seem to be any group discussions. It may have changed since then.

Left one social media because it was made up of a series of volunteers that couldn't keep their hardware working.

Because I'm a grumpy cuss, I got kicked off a largely inactive social media site without ever putting in an application to join. I got a reputation they heard about from somebody else in Naples, Florida. I try to console myself realizing they rarely got anyone to post on their system and dismissing them as gullible assholes.

I find Facebook to be emotionally taxing sometimes, and I try to keep it to a minimum. Ever since Trump was elected I say the same thing about news.

3

I am still on FB and enjoying it. I follow my grandkids on Instagram but don't mess with Twitter. FB weeds out a lot of the chatter and I unfollow people occasionally. I have used my personal FB as a political organizing tool for years.

not me. i'm a writer and i have a nice big collection of potential readers on facebook, which i also enjoy on many levels, not least the ability to connect with old friends and distant family. i also subscribe there to such venues as nyt, wapo, salon, the atlantic, dan rather's news and guts, and many more, and i get directed to news about which i care faster there than i do here. i don't see a conflict. i enjoy both sites differently. and this site is not exactly narcissism-free!

g

Glad it works for you. I hope I didn't offend.

@HockeyGuy nope, no offense taken. i don't own even a single share of stock in facebook lol.

I've never had the need to join any of these and still don't. Yes, one being privacy. I also have professional clients and didn't want them to tap into my life or know anything else about me, my life or that of my children. I obviously didn't mind face-to-face conversation about kids in general and so in. I also always made them think I was involved for fear of those wanting to hit on me. I preferred to separate my job from my personal side of things. I preferred to keep it professional. People have a tendency to measure people up. All those I keep in touch with, my friends, my kids etc they're all a phone call or video chat (or Skype) if they're overseas or another city. Besides I don't want anyone looking for me and not prepared to put my life out there, and I'm not looking or wondering about anyone else's life either. I have access to them in other ways. This does not mean I shut people out and prefer to be hiding. Not so at all. I'm in WhatsApp with those close to me and those that know me. We WhatsApp chat or message each other as explained above. Both my son's are on Facebook, Instagram and so on and most people around me. That's their choice. I also know many that has had "side effects" from Facebook. ...but I'm not interested or never have been. and this does also not mean that I'm afraid of moving with "technology" or meeting people and so on. I see new people everyday job-wise and come to know quite a bit about them. I've also travelled, not that extensively as I would've liked to but been to a few countries. so not being on Facebook is just my choice.

2

Very limited FB and here, that is it.

Ditto - FB helps me keep in touch with scattered friends and family

2

There’s nothing on there that interests me. So I left.

1

thought about FB b/c my son-in-law is a sociopath who has a alienated me from my daughter & grand daughters. if i had a FB account at least i could tell my side of the story. also thought of youtube. but then, i wonder what the fck is the point.

2

I had a Farcebook account for about 6 months, went on it about 4 or 5 times, didn't really like it. When I found out that it's just a way to keep tabs on people and sell their private information, I quit it. Hardly anything would make me happier than to see it fade away into oblivion and Schmuckerburg have to take a job working at McDonald's to pay his bills.

i'd like revenge

Limited Facebook in attempt to keep connected to a few family and friends.
