I enjoyed the read. My grandfather was a Mexican American Soldier in France. I have lots of his stories in my memory bank. 😁

The European part of the war ended. The terrible soviet terror continued. What a huge mistake was not to nuke Stalin! Patton was right.

Well, Hitler and Napoleon thought they could defeat Russia too. The main reason it wasn't seriously considered is to occupy Russia at even Germany/Japan levels would require an even larger army than the US had at the end of the war.

As I was born in March 1945, and was a mere six weeks old in the week these events took place, I was extremely interested in reading about them. I knew most of the facts already, but not all of them. We here in the U.K. have always known that the USA believes that it did most of the heavy lifting in the war, after Pearl Harbour forced them to join in...and this has always been compounded by Hollywood portraying America winning the war with minor help from the British and Commonwealth troops. We Brits, of course know better. As far as the G.I.s raping in Europe it’s a fact that all troops do this, sadly. It is still happening in war zones today, it seems to be in the DNA of soldiers to do this, even to the women folk of their allies. All the more reprehensible then that the USA is refusing to allow its military personnel to be held responsible for the crimes they commit when serving overseas.

Of course. We protect our GI-s. The US army takes care of the crimes.

@TCorCM What do you mean? Check the population and military numbers! The Russian losses were mostly because of Stalin and the communist/socialist ideology.

@TCorCM I don’t think so...considering the English Channel is only 27 miles wide it is amazing and a testimony to the British forces, especially the RAF that we were not invaded by Germany. You must remember there were two fronts...the Eastern and Western ones. That was Hitler’s real downfall....taking on Russia as well as the Western powers. It was Napoleon’s downfall too in the 19th century, and it was a history lesson he should have paid attention to.

@TCorCM Without the US the Russians would speak German these days. Please read Archipelago Gulag.

@TCorCM The US provided a very significant amount of war materials to the Soviets. All the time, from December of 1941 to 1945. As far as Stalin realized the importance of a healthy and supported population. Hope you are joking! After the war he sent over 800 thousand disabled military veterans to Siberia to die. With zero material support, no housing and no internal passport. I think this improved the overall health of the population.

@TCorCM Stalin sent approximately 60 millions to Gulag, from the 1920-s to the 1950 -s. He is, unquestionable, the dirtiest henchman in human history.
