WHAT RELIGION CAN DO TO HUMAN BEINGS

Nasrin Sotoudeh - The Iranian woman lawyer who defended women’s right to remove hijab gets 38 years, 148 lashes

[womenintheworld.com]

After two trials described by Amnesty International as “grossly unfair,” Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison and 148 lashes.

This is similar to Christian Religious Right's daily persecution of millions of women in the U.S. and around the world of woman's rights about her own body through church and state - like birth control, abortion at every local, state and federal level - while living every day - day in and day out. The methods may be different but the pain, agony, mistreatment, injustice, unfairness that is inflicted are similar.

The creatures which did this to her should be prosecuted. After the US Army brings down the Iranian government, the prosecution becomes possible.

Let is first prosecute the Alabama republican legislators who are giving a living hell to all women in the state, not just to one woman.

Do they think this will stop her? Only if she ends up dead over the ordeal. She will spread her message even in prison.

While I do agree that Islam and Christianity are both oppressive towards woman, I don't think you can equate restricting abortion and birth control with whipping a woman nearly to death and imprisoning her for probably the rest of her life.

I would argue a lifelong harassment and persecution by controlling her rights, choices by Christians is worse

@Tiramisu I would disagree with that. If given the choice of losing birth control and abortion rights or spending 38 freaking years in a third world prison, I'll gladly take the first option. I'm pretty sure most women would agree with me. Not saying it wouldn't suck, but damn, wrongful imprisonment has to be one of the worst things we do to other humans. Having some of your rights and choices controlled is not worse than having all of your rights and choices taken away.

“Let’s glamorize her plight by putting on hijabs in solidarity! So woke!”

@TheDarkNolanitel

There is a big difference between support for wearing a hijab by choice (the left) compared with the forced wearing of hijab (islamists) or forced banning of hijab (conservative). In this case the conservatives are behaving like islamists. And you seem to be supporting that behavior.

Why are you on the side of forcing women to not wear hijab? You should be supporting a woman's freedom. The leftists are correct in supporting a women right to choose to wear a hijab. Wearing one doesnt automatically support islan or the bad aspects of islam.

Can you understand that?

@MakeItGood They’re still fetishizing oppression.

Religion is a ruse that was developed to control populations. Despotic leaders use it despotically, no matter what the creed.

Is abortion legal in Iran? Is the ban on women remove their hats the same?

That is not the issue. The issue is the pain, agony, atrocities, injustice inflicted in the name of religion. Every religion and every land have a set of these bad things. The issues may not be the same but the pain feels the same to all human being. Slow persecution, harassment to flogging in public and burning on stake - religions have all flavors. In this day and age, people are stoned and beaten to death in India by Hindu nationalists. No one religion is better than another. They all are bad. That is the point.
