i used to take pride in just reading non-fiction. a decade or so ago i started to realize that i already know how fckd up the world is & there is absolutely no point in further depressing myself over big picture events that i have no control over e.g. i've read Tabbi in mag articles & don't need to know how hopeless our situation is with trump as leader.
imo, we are in a crash & burn course & will get there regardless of how much knowledge one imbues him/herself with.
i would rather read some good novelists from which i'm entertained & actually come across some insights that i consider more interesting & beneficial than any of the popular non-fiction writers come up with.

I agree with your point. The Taibbi book is a very interesting post-mortem of the whole election cycle. I thought it was entertaining as well. I know how you feel when it comes to it being depressing. But what I find even more depressing is when people decide to not educate themselves and then just watch the MSM and feel like they have an educated opinion on current events. It doesn't matter if it's right or left these days, if it comes out of the MSM, it's usually missing important context. For example, the political wranglings the US is having in Venezuela. Most people that exclusively watch the MSM think "Maduro bad. Getting rid of him = good". Both the right and the left wing MSM seem to be in agreement on some troubling propaganda which leave out important context and, unfortunately there are people that think that when CNN is in agreement with Fox News it somehow means "they both are getting the story right", when in fact it often means nothing of the sort and instead means that both wings of the MSM are pushing unified propaganda. I do need to read more fiction though. I just have a hard time finding stuff that interests me.

@jongeier ,
totally agree with you on your Maduro point.
problem is that too small a % of the population really know what's going on; let alone care.
the ruling class are firmly in control & i just can't see how that will change; so i now try to disassociate myself with the whole debacle.
