Living in rural SC, it's hard to be out as non-Christian. I chose FreeThinker as my screenname before I saw the site definition of freethinker. I think I'm probably closer to spiritual. I think there are things that happen that I can't explain but I don't believe any one religion/God has all the answers.

I’m very curious as to what you mean when you describe yourself as spiritual.

Well try to remember spiritualism is still trying to explain something you don’t understand. Religion makes money filling in the holes of understanding and so much so that all through history it has denied facts. I have a friend who is “spiritual” she has seen ghosts. I do not believe ghosts, but I believe she thinks she saw something that she doesn’t understand and she called it a ghost. As humans we try to find meaning because we preprogrammed to find patterns. It’s a trait left over from when we were not at the top of the food chain.

Depending on your definition of SPIRITUAL. I was taught a very practical definition of spirit as the conscious and subconscious MIND, when I looked ? into Eastern theology.

Western civilization is still strapped with concepts of “spiritual” and other supernatural “beings”, angels, demons, gods and the like.

These are actually childish superstitious concepts, while western civilization folx think they are so advanced and superior!

I felt uncomfortable in rural Virginia, but then I went down to rural SC and saw what it’s like down there. I can see why you’re worried.

I understand your feelings, although I am living in New England, where it is much easier than in the South or Midwest. Yet there are still times when devout Christians try to save me, and ask if I've made Jesus my own personal savior, etc, etc... When they say God Bless You, I just tell them thank you and leave it at that.

When I read the definitions when signing up, I didn't really think any of them fit, and that maybe a couple partially fit. I have my own beliefs, closer to Carl Sagan's. I think that we're all made of "star stuff", as he used to say. I don't know if there's a "God", but I'm pretty sure that if there is, God is nothing like us and is not an all-powerful human-looking being. Probably just more of the star-stuff... but maybe a little more interesting. All I know is, I'll find out soon enough. In the meantime, I just want to have fun and be a good person.

I don't think that one can be "spiritual" and Agnostic. Just my opinion.

Please show me even ONE “answer” “religion/god” has provided for real things we don’t understand...
