At the G-20 Summit, Vladimir Putin said that liberalism was "obsolete." I can see a logic behind this statement. If we live in a world in which there are not enough resources to support life for everyone on the planet... then some people are going to perish, perhaps a large population of people. In such a desperate environment, I can see how a liberal approach would have impractical applications. It is frightening to think just what kind of social order would need to occur to adjust to such an existential threat.

The statement that there aren't enough resources for everyone is in fact false. We produce more than enough food and goods for everyone on the planet to have a fair standard of life.
Our system of dispersing those goods is deeply flawed. In a capitalist society creating fake scarcity of necessities means bigger profits. We throw away unused food and goods, many homes sit empty for years and we litterally defecate into clean potable water because a small number of people profit from those wasteful practices(among others).
"But people will have too many children if you provide them with the necessities!" Is an argument that comes up quite a bit. There is a very simple fix for that- educate women. There is an inverse correlation between the amount of education a woman receives and the number of children she has. It has been shown in many cultures and economic systems. Ensure that all women receive an education at least equating to a bachelors degree and you WILL see a drop in birthrates.
As with many other simple and effective solutions though, there is no profit for our "leaders" in enacting such policies and since the masses can't or won't force those leaders to behave ethically we're stuck with their shitty system until the whole thing falls apart or the masses get off our asses and force meaningful changes.

it's a strange situation when it comes to human reproduction. it seems that many of the very rich/intelligent have many progeny & a disproportionate number of the poor also have many progeny. the middle/professional class are choosing to have fewer. i don't think this will end well.

Not concerned. We all die eventually.

Funny, Northern Europe and Scandinavia seem to be doing ok...

@Sam-a-Lamb not really. All of them have fairly big immigrant populations, especially Sweden and Germany, all are EU members or have open borders to the EU. They have the usual issues with racism and getthoisation, but a solid social structure just means they handle then a bit better. They're not perfect, but they're still doing fine.

@Sam-a-Lamb I'm guessing their populations haven't been "educated" to be complete morons.

This Putin stuff is simply a sign of the sentiment of the times, instead of a true reading on overall liberalism being dead. I'm with @bobwjr and @zesty on this. Truly, if you go back in history, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" when it comes to humans. The history of Nitrogen, as fertilizer, is one simple example of how, in the early 1900's, as world population grew, and everyone claimed we were unsustainable, science solved it. No-one ever thought the world could sustain the 7.7B it has today. And, as we continue to populate, we are now starting vertical farming, which becomes much healthier/less polluting, and has greater yield.

So... there's the scarcity model and the abundance model. The scarcity model says things are finite, and leads to inherent hoarding, greed, xenophobia, and war. The abundance model is the opposite...it just says, "There's more X out there than you think, and science will help us make more of X, so chill. It might feel scarce right now, but just wait, we'll figure it out." So far, at every turn, humans have overcome, or are overcoming every problem put in front of them...with science. And those scientific advances, help us to calm down that nagging part of all of us that fears a scarcity situation.

Trust human ingenuity, as it has never let is down... and... don't, for one minute, truly give thought to the soundbites put forth by Vladdy Pooty.

@Sam-a-Lamb That's an interesting perspective, that, while abhorrent, is not wrong. Hopefully, survival in the next 1000 years will not actually require a decision of "us or them". But, if it does come to that, truly the decision gets rationalized by effectively demonizing a group. They'd need a new name...seems that some cross of sacrificial lambs, and scape goats would be appropriate.

In the end, I have expectation that we are 10 yrs from massive, world rattling changes in policy. This is the end of boomer rule, and beginning of people who are willing to legislate major change. (One just need look at AOC or the speeches from M. Stoneman Douglas High School students). For the good, and for the bad.

Maybe but there is a chance technology can fix if we give it a chance

@Sam-a-Lamb no going by current advances for carbon reduction and green power

@Sam-a-Lamb yup that's our job to chang

@Sam-a-Lamb Not really. See history. Nobody can deny the technological advances in Hitler"s Germany. If you consider, the Nazi Germany was as repulsive and oppressive as possible, but still.

@bobwjr You forgot to mention the cow fart effect!

I'm sure that there is no existential treat at all. The great results of scientific and technological developments of developed and free countries, even today, could easily solve all the problems if not the PC and environmemto idiots. There is zero logic behind
