Religious people feel as if nonbelievers are lost souls. Personally I feel sympathetic toward them because I see them as brainwashed.
The religious suffer from cognitive dissonance, and they don't even realize it.
I can tell you that as a believer I felt I had found sufficient answers to the human condition and regarded those who hadn't as lost. I guess it didn't rise to the level of genuine concern however because I never could get on board with proselytizing those lost souls ... they didn't see themselves as lost and (rightly) regarded my opinion of them as impertinent. I found this confusing and regrettable but it took personal tragedy to bring home the logical inconsistencies of my beliefs and join the ranks of the "lost".
