So the Amazon and other tropical forests have been gradually destroyed for years ?. What's your point.?

Maybe there are more pressing problems being caused by this populist govt.

@Bierbasstard True, the lungs of the world comment is ridiculous but maybe it needs an over the top comment like this to catch the public interest. Also the Amazon "expert" cannot be right in saying that the Amazon consumes all the oxygen it creates.
Bolsonaro's populist govt have no interest in the indigenous people living there and actively encourages development. Probably much worse than the fires which are mainly on cleared scrub land are the illegal loggers and miners who conflict with the people living in the forest.

@Bierbasstard Some interesting stuff there and Nepstad is obviously a very learned guy but I still cannot see how respiration within the Amazon can use up all the oxygen produced by the plant life. Maybe if the Brazilian cities are included

One question about using the deforested land for agribusiness: What happens to business when the water dries up because there is no forest canopy to sequester it in the ground? Doesn't that mean that man-made savanna lands get desertified? Also with less water, there will be less oxygen.

Rain falls on whatever is below it, always has...'sequester it'?

This article narrowly focuses on a phrase, "lungs of the world" and ignores the entire deforestation issue. Just sad, and disturbing.....
