HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE HEARD THIS?

  1. Racism does not exist in America
  2. There is no racist bone in my body
  3. I am not racist. I have black friends
  4. This one example does not prove there is racism...... lol

TV anchor apologizes after comparing black co-host to a gorilla

A morning TV anchor in Oklahoma apologized a day after likening her black cohost to a gorilla.

Alex Housden said a gorilla at the Oklahoma City Zoo "kind of looks like you" to her colleague, Jason Hackett, at the end of a feature on KOCO-TV, a CNN affiliate, on Thursday.

I can't help but be reminded of this song from the musical Avenue Q (a very adult parody of "Sesame Street" ), I think it says it all.
The song is called "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist":

I’m astounded that someone would be dumb enough to say that, but Is it necessarily racist to say something like that?

Not only are we all racist but we are also tribal and our tribes can run from something as innocuous as the apartment complex I live in and my closeness/protection of other tenants to something far more serious such as being heterosexual and excluding gays and lesbians from friendship to hating anyone of another ethnicity, race, religion, etc.
If you look at the history of literature, advertisements, news releases in this country it has been racist since the beginning of time. Early plantation literature tried to explain how happy the blacks were to be cared for by the white slave holders - think of a Mammie or perhaps Uncle Remus. As Reconstruction began the literature began to change and now blacks had to be thought of as "less than" in intelligence, abilities, humanity, you name it. And then once the US moved into Jim Crow era the attack was ramped up to make the black man into a creature who would rape white women and kill their children and thus it made lynching for almost any reason a popular source of punishment without the need for trial or guilt. If you think about the fact that the Green Book was published up until 1967 to tell Negro travellers where they could safely lodge, have meals, shop, buy fuel for their car, etc. I think it becomes clear that the old ingrained racist and segregationist ideas are still with us. A good book if you want to explore this is "Stony the Road" by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

I've traveled and worked everywhere except Antarctica. I can attest from personal experience that all 'races' are racist. The most extreme examples I've witnessed are in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Northern Africa. We are not unique here in the USA.

A stupid, arrogant woman!

From some of the research, apparently we are all "racist" at some very deep level of the psyche. We had to stay with our clan way back in prehistoric times in order to survive.

3

The look by the guy explains it all. I call it the black tax. The extra bullshit that comes with being black in this country.

Observations and opinions aside, she is not going to be able to live this down for a verrrrrryyy loooooooong time.

Did she say it in a bad way? They are co-hosts. What was the context?

Everyone should know there are red lines in racism. I cannot call anyone a Negro even as a joke. It does not matter if I meant it in a good way. Condoning what she said is even worse.

@St-Sinner I was wrong! My internet is terrible here in China and I wasn’t able to bring up the CNN article. The internet worked today and I read the article. She did appear to apologize and he accepted. It was hard to believe she would say something like that on air. Trump does it all the time so maybe it’s wearing off on other people.

Would it be indelicate of me to point out that human beings, that's ALL human beings, are a primate species very closely related to apes?

Also, the look on that guy's face is priceless. "Bitch, you;re dead as soon as we go to a commercial!

Well, there goes that fake, ‘we’re so buddy at 06:00 in the morning’, ‘we are just like you except we get paid your salary in a day’ relationship.

Don’t know if Oklahoma is in slave country or not but I am sure the comment delighted the punters who swan around in A Surrey With A Fringe On Top!

She is a gorilla in a green dress. Opps! Sorry.

I am not sure an apology is enough. Perhaps sacking would be better.

@Deiter Have you ever heard of the “blue eyes brown eyes “ experiment?

Look it up. Everybody should have to do it.

3

Well, he sorta does....

Well, YOU sorta do....and I sorta do....

That's what I was just going to say.
It's not like we aren't all the same species after all.

@jlynn37
Exactly.... we're all "great apes". Primates.
So.... why's everyone all atwitter?

@bigpawbullets Well, do you tell an ugly person "You look kinda ugly"?

@bigpawbullets

EXACTLY!!! Look up the words Primate, Great Apes and Hominids and see how they interrelate with each other!
She states a FACT that gets someone's panties in a wad, and then she has to apologize for it? There are more similarities than differences between our body and that of a gorilla. And that guy DOES look very similar to a gorilla! In the junior high school I went to, there was a guy who happened to be a cracker like me, and he looked just like an ape that had been shaved! He had a huge protruding jaw bone, sloped forehead, etc. And he hated blacks!
BTW, a human body (both male and female) has as many hairs covering it as any gorilla or chimpanzee, but most of them are very fine and hard to see, except under the right conditions.

@rogueflyer
Well, depends on the circumstances. If I know the "hooman" I might.
