at this rate it's just a matter of time until kids won't be able to put on halloween costumes for fear of offending some group.

Except that races are not Halloween costumes and to reduce a POC to nothing more than a costume is insulting. "Costumes that rely on cultural dress and/or stereotypes are offensive and oppressive.
Even if you don’t think you’re vehemently racist, you can still perpetuate racism.

If you're reading this and thinking, "But it's just a costume", take a moment to reflect on why you think that's the case. It's likely that your culture and/or identity has not be historically and currently trivialized, mocked, and viewed as "funny" or "scary" to dress in. Making someone else's culture and/or identity a caricature for you to wear for one night is a terrible costume idea."

I wonder if white people are offended if a brown person ‘whites up’

i didn't vote for him. i'm apolitical & don't vote. but to me this is political correctness rum amok.

when I hear/read that phrase, this image comes to mind... it doesn't matter when it happened it was wrong then and it is wrong now... just like if he raped or murdered or stole in the past it should not be glossed over and not acknowledged and discussed, at the very least which is what we are doing now.

There seem to be so many people queuing up to be offended these day, many of them by proxy, maybe as with our original poster.

Quite troubling if we start chastising the rear end of the pantomime horse at some point over the next few years!

I don't enjoy political correctness at its worst, but I feel like it's a necessary evil to bring attention to callous indifference or ignorance, which can do real harm. I'm fine offending the individual as long as offense isnt the point. I'm not fine saying political correctness has no place, because it draws the attention to a better conversation. Ok, getting off my soapbox.

@Geoffrey51 It is not about offense by proxy it is about pointing out that he is a hypocrite and is not the golden boy angel americans believe him to be.... but it seems you've got a bromance or crush on him and any criticism is not going to be taken well by ya :/

@demifeministgal if you say so. I’m a Brit in Australia and don’t give a rats about Canadian politics. I am more concerned that free speech is heading down the don’t criticise anything route.

The best comedians are social commentators who report what they see. I am so pleased we have had Billy Connolly and Bill Hicks. I guess they would be too shocking now.

I saw recently English comedian Bill Bailey taking the piss out of German band Kraftwerk and German tech music generally Is that allowed? If so why?

I think I agree that it's wrong to use a race as a costume; you can dress as a recognizable Aladdin without the added effect of darkened skin. But something isnt wrong just because it draws attention to different races, it's wrong if it disparages other races or aims to make inferior in any way. Did that happen here? I don't know, maybe.
There was a gentleman I heard who I believe is currently serving in Canadian leadership who was part of the affected class Trudeau dressed as. He clearly wasnt happy about it, and that's good enough for me to say he shouldnt have done that. Did Trudeau have to do what he did? No, he didnt. Am I glad he got called on it? Yes, I am. Best way to figure a thing out is to address it head on. He SHOULD have mentioned it before he got caught.
But...I don't think it's a reason to change your opinion of him, if you liked him before. To paraphrase a stupid book, Let those of us who are perfect be the ones to cast judgement. I've fucked up royally. Usually out of ignorance.
Trudeau clearly doesnt aim to make other races feel "less than" by his words and actions. Hes far from perfect, but hes far from abysmal, too.
To gaffe is human, to forgive...should also be human.

Are you talking about Singh, the guy with the turban who is the leader of our NDP party? And I didn't like him much before this incident because of all his faux promises and all the fckery he has had to apologize for during his leadership, so this just made me dislike him a tad more.

@demifeministgal yes! That's the guy. And that's totally understandable. As an American with my own issues with current leadership, I can sympathize to a point, but he still seems miles beyond what we have here. Just a question, have you had a PM you were satisfied with? If so, who and why? I liked having Obama for 8 years, despite his shortcomings, because it was easy to believe that he tried his best to serve others beyond himself.

@Nakedterror I don't think so. We've only ever had cons or libs as PMs here and the one time there was an NDP leader in my province I was a toddler so don't remember. I wonder if I would have been satisfied by him though... maybe.... this guy was good too and I think would have made a great PM [ndp.ca]

@demifeministgal holy cow, that guy sounds legit. I'm unfamiliar with that publication, so I don't know of any bias it would have, but he sounds terrific.
Follow up question: how would you describe NDP party to an american like myself? Is it somewhat like our libertarian party here?

Someone posted this elsewhere and I agree with the sentiment: "okay, so up until ten years ago you were racist before getting woke. I can buy that. We all change and those who do so in a positive fashion should always be allowed the benefit of the doubt.

However, this is your second run at office. After all of the criticism you've taken for promises broken and ethical breaches, when you have your supporters scouring the past for any ancient quote or negative social media post generated by a political opponent, when you've not been at all shy about accusing others of racism, when you decided to run for office again, why did you not try to get ahead of this story?

Why didn't you get way ahead of it by revealing the photos back when you realized you were racist? As this episode has made clear, many Canadians of all backgrounds don't care. Many Canadians apparently didn't even know if was offensive until right now (?!) and, like you, thought it was harmless fun. Why didn't you risk whatever ire that might draw at the beginning of your career when there was so much less for your party and your supporters to lose? Why not the first time you ran for PM? It doesn't make sense.

You're very good at apologizing. After the fact you are the most contrite sincere person in the world. And it clearly works on those who follow you in pretty much any questionable ethical situation. So I understand it is your greatest tool. But in this situation, when you had a decade to open this door on racism in Canada- an issue you've always claimed is close to your heart- when you had a chance to inspire other political figures to come clean about their own transgressions, when you have a chance to be the first to lead everyone forward, why didn't you make that choice?

When I consider these questions it leads me to all kinds of possibilities, most of them maddening and unpleasant, so I'll need an answer from you as someone who wants to represent this country- why didn't you lead?"

I realize to potential for racial hurt with brown face. However I give some understanding as this was going in costume to an Arabian nights party. I would have to look at whether the intent was degrade another race or not. Remember this was before black or brown face was brought to public. Not saying it was right. Just asking to keep these things in mind.

Other incidents have emerged which were not going in costume... also a race is NOT a costume and minorities can and do dress up as white characters without having to don white makeup... so it can and should be done or do a better job of your costume if nobody can tell what/who you are without darkening your skin. *general you, not specific you

Quite right. Ignorance of history fuels so much misunderstanding in many areas

From what I can tell most of the worship is because he's relatively young and very good looking.

Yeah, we're that shallow. Suprised?
