Had a liberal group over last night. One gentleman mentions that he's agnostic. I took it full bore and said it's like the tooth fairy...you can't disprove him either so I just don't believe at all. The guy next to me asked me if I don't believe in a god then do I believe in right and wrong? Laws are scientific...a god doesn't create right and wrong. WE DO. Lack of religion doesn't make one believe in hurting others as a right. Ignorance!
Religious people often confuse lack of a belief in god to a lack of morals. There are some who are woefully ignorant and believe that those who are atheists don’t know how to distinguish right from wrong. I too have encountered such crass questions and treat them with the contempt and derision that they deserve,
It is a byproduct of the religion they belong to. When one hears something over and over and over one stops thinking and becomes a believer. So if these people started to see there was no god would they become immoral people? Is their morality based on the greed of immortality or fear of hell? This question comes up often and I have made many postings and comments on this subject. I have also been able to see things more clearly by doing so which is one benefit of this site.
So I wonder if he thinks the Inquisition was right or the Salem witch craft executions or jihad. We could go through the bible and make a large list. Think I'll stick with the Humanist's tenets.
Right and wrong are human concepts that have changed and developed over time and still vary among different cultures. If there is a god that is the measure of right and wrong, and it wants to convey this message to its "creation," it has certainly done a completely inadequate job of doing so.
