In my experience when theologians talk about open mindedness, what they're really talking about is a willingness to accept their suppositions and beliefs, unsupported by evidence or fact.

That is exactly my experience. It's a very frustrating and hypocritical proposition.

Totally agree. Remove any logic for what they are about to say......

To hear a theist talking about open-mindedness is laughable. They all have their beliefs to protect and open-mindedness is the last thing they really want.

Willingness to accept... Hmmm, open minded. After writing and rewriting, ive decided to agree.

2

Exactly! They start from the position that they are 100% correct and the other is 100% wrong. They accuse those who don't accept what they claim (without evidence) as being closed minded while refusing to even consider the possibility that they are in error.

I totally agree. It's really ridiculous here in the Bible Belt. All these Republican pols who are trying to ram evangelical beliefs down our throats, are just pandering to the biblethumpers.

Beautifully succinct, Geophrii! Academics are frequently pulling their hair out over students' stubborn insistence that all opinions deserve equal regard. Idiots. It's the Fox-News-ification of American mentality: The notion that repeating factually unsupported lies often and emphatically enough somehow is supposed to equal "truth." This is why our democracy is even vulnerable to foreign meddling; we've been dumbed down by relentless assaults on secular education and respect for the scientific process.
p.s. I don't have your talent for succinctness. 😉
