I watched Bill's show just this morning (Sunday) and I liked the Tyson segment. He handled the separation of church and state in a scientific way and that said a lot. I liked the end of the show when Bill says he and lots of others will pay Trump to leave. 🙂

I've become less and less of an admirer of NDGT over recent years, but in this show he hit some high points. I did NOT agree, however, with his assertion about the differences between objective and personal truths. Personal truths be damned. That's an opinion, which may or may not be true. Jesus is my saviour, his example, is not a truth of any kind, including personal. It's an opinion which lacks evidence. Jesus and God hate gays, likewise might be someone's bigoted opinion but it is not a personal "truth" for the same reason, no proof or evidence. He devalues the meaning of truth to say otherwise. Like many public figures he still feels the need to "respect" religious nonsense, lest he offend believers. Humbug. On the other hand I cheered when he said we should not so much consider ourselves as members of various races and instead see ourselves as all of the human race. Indeed, racial tribalism is hindering us as a species.

All kinds of tribalism. All kinds of us-against-them thinking. NdGT doesn’t respect religious nonsense - he respects that all humans, no matter what stage of their intellectual development they happen to be at, are members of the same tribe.

@skado no, you are conflating two separate things he said on the show. Did you see it? On reconciling science and religion and people asking him, he tried to distinguish between people's personal truth, and objective scientific truth. He said people can have their own personal truth, but scientific truth is different. My point above is that personal truth can be rubbish. Truth is the wrong word. I say again that I think he doesn't want to offend. He won't even come out and say he is an agnostic or atheist. He always fudges. He is always worried about his "image." However, in another part of the show, on race, he said he wished people would focus on being part of the human race. I agree on that as I suspect we do.

I don’t guess we have any way of knowing for sure what’s in another person’s head. They may not even know, themselves, since a lot of our motivations are unconscious.

The way it appears to me is that Tyson knows that it’s terrifying to humans to have their foundational assumptions of life challenged, and he realizes that one of the biggest problems we face is the quality of public education, and he thinks it’s easier to teach people who trust you than people who you’ve been terrorizing. Maybe he actually respects them and their religious freedom. He never pulls any punches on the science.

I have no way to get inside Tyson’s head, but if I found myself behaving the way he does, those would be my reasons.

@skado well, it was clear to me. He expressed himself clearly on the point of so-called personal truth, and I thought it was wrong. It was not a rigorous panel or discussion, and had he said it around, say Sam Harris, it would have been challenged. If you disagree well ok.

Good argument. I think that's just his public persona - he likes to be "nice" the the "Religulous"...
