Has anyone tried out a Unitarian Church? I’ve always been curious about my local one, but I’m apprehensive that being honest about my atheism may alienate me. Are they open to committed non-believers?

I ruled it out as I do not need it. Too many Sundays were ruined for me in my youth by having to go to any church.

They are still xSTAIN based. non-denominational xSTAIN who "embrace" (or, really, buffet style) other "traditions"

i find this appropriation style of "spiritual" belief to be rather objectionable, offensive, vile an odious.

In my experience, these places of worship are flexible in terms of what you want to call a "higher power", but some sort of "deity" seems a necessary thing for them. It's a "thanks, but no thanks" for me.

I don't see them as "places of worship" at all, being as nothing is worshipped. More like a place to meet and discuss ideas without fear of ridicule .

@evergreen Well, if it dresses like a church, has sermons like a church and asks for contributions like a church ..... It might be a danged CHURCH!!

My suspicion is this disagreement might well be coming from different experiences. I hope so, because that would mean you had found an environment where you can "....meet and discuss ideas without fear of ridicule." If so, good for you. But that was not the experience I had.

Different communities have different "personalities" for lack of a better word. I hope yours is as good as you say.

I went to two different Unitarian churches in my area. At the first one, both ministers were atheists. What bothered me was how much emphasis they put on giving them money.

I didn't have that experience at all. They said contributions were strictly optional

@TheoryNumber3 I'm sure that all congregations are different.
