Almost like mini-cities. Vienna is a remarkable city. It was premiered in the Classic film "The Third Man." It was also a divided city like Berlin. Early on a trailblazer building went up in the area of housing. It was created by an art-deco artist named Hundertwasser. [kunsthauswien.com]

The magic is in how it is implemented, not envisioned. Uncontrolled capitalism, uncontrolled socialism - both are bad. We have the Uncontrolled Capitalism problem. You can have great programs without uttering the word socialism. Articulating your message is very important in the modern world of communication. You use wrong words, and it will kill the message. We can have great health care, college education without saying the word. There is no way the word "socialism" will be acceptable to American people at large, no matter how many examples we give.

It's true that calling a policy socialism brings toxicity to it. But it's changing, the younger generation is embracing socialism. Both the ideology and the word.

@RoboGraham It is changing but I believe we are not going to have Bernie's dream realized in the next 30 years.

The last statement is key....and it applies to all countries and cities where there is a good quality of life and contented citizens...high taxation! To many of us that is an anathema and is the last thing we want...but only if we are willing to pay higher tax can this sort of beneficial housing development exist. The social and democratic models of governance need to be considered more and this example in Vienna would be a good place to start.

People buy into the myth that the richer you are, the happier you will be. Research has shown this to simply not be the case. In fact the richer you are, the more isolated you become, the more distrustful. Besides just how much money does anyone really need? Once we're comfortable and can afford a yearly holiday overseas, what more does a person want? Gathering possessions is just greed. I want my country to top the Happiest Country list.

@MsDemeanour There is a movement (started in Seattle) called voluntary simplicity [simplicitycollective.com] A film was created which, even though it is a bit dated, is worth watching starts at 35 seconds.

I signed on to this idea and have never turned back.

Entirely because of wall street profiteers who profit at the expense of anyone not rich

Thanks for posting the video about how a nation which values social government empowers everybody shown in the example of how it works in Vienna. I agree with you ... the powerful in America do create propaganda against social democracy or democratic socialism by getting gullible people to believe it will fail or that it's evil.

I believe there is a renewed awareness of social democracy which is growing. There is a video that explains both the growing awareness and the historical foundations which have preceded it. "This is a fairly good overview of what's happened both historically and currently in terms of social..."

Base word in latin; Social. Society. Such a horrible thing.

In the States it is generational and is tied to "communism" by too many folks. When enough Baby Boomers die it may change.

I have considered religion to be a form of hard communism.

@PondartIncbendog By most definitions held to be true in sociology almost all religions are to a greater or lesser extent fascist, only primitive Christianity as described in the book of acts is fundamentally communist and how many churches of today adhere to that model? None.

well this clip doesn't really tell you why you're brainedwashed to believe socialism is a dirty word but we do need to see examples of democratic socialism, unlike China or Russia, where people all live with dignity. Capitalists have done a good job at exploiting and manipulating their workers into believing that theirs is the only free system.
I'm Australian. We could do this here, but capitalism prevails and grows stronger every day.

Thanks for sharing Rupert Murdoch with us!

@Haemish1 lol sorry but we were glad to be rid of the bastard but he still owns much of the media here too.

@MsDemeanour
