CAN BIG MIKE RID US OF DAMAGED DONALD?--Mike Bloomberg is a self made billionaire, said to be the 8th richest person in the country at $54 billion. He is very committed to getting the current embarrassment out of office & recently announced his candidacy for president. He seems to feel the current Democratic field is not up to snuff to do the job.

Some discount his chances. The progressives say he is a billionaire trying to buy the presidency, a dangerous precedent. Some say his support of stop & frisk,as Mayor of New York City, a policing policy some consider racist, will hurt him with blacks, an important voter block in the Democratic primary.

Some say he has been too cozy with Republicans & real estate developers in the past. Although he has supported Democratic causes , many suspect he is not a true Democrat.

He is also a short, Jewish billionaire from New York. Many wonder how that will fly in the rest of the country.

He is entering the contest very late & skipping the early primaries. He is concentrating his efforts on Super Tuesday & the states after. A candidate who has done that has never won the nomination.

But this may be a deliberate strategy. Trump has accumulated a one billion dollar war chest, a formidable obstacle for the other candidates, who are scrambling to raise funds. Bloomberg has 54 billion & is willing to spend as much as he needs to to defeat Trump. He also has the support of his powerful media empire.

He may have deliberately avoided the scrum of the early primaries & may be shooting for a contested convention, where his money will have a lot of clout with the super delegates after the first ballot.

He has strongly supported gun control, combating climate change, sensible immigration policy, & other issues of great interest to Democratic voters. He can talk meaningfully about creating jobs, as he has created 10's of thousands of them. The other Democratic candidates have been relatively silent on this point.

Many other business leaders have been very concerned by the irrationality of Trump's business policies, such as his trade war. Business hates uncertainty. They will be inclined to support Bloomberg with additional billions.

With proper marketing, this short, Jewish, NYC billionaire can be changed into a working class hero. There could be pictures of him chopping wood on his farm, bare chested with photo shopped muscles, or perhaps riding a horse like Vladimir Putin.

Bloomberg is an able leader and administrator. I don't know what calculation he has in mind, but as president he can deliver good changes better than any Republican or Democratic candidates currently in the field. I have been following him since 1986 in New York since he replaced the mighty Reuters quotes and pricing machines in Wall Street. He was a fantastically successful Mayor of New York.

I think after the terrible misadministration of the Trump era, we need a really good administrator like Bloomberg to clean up the mess

@Remiforce Bloomberg has no corruption or nepotism history, not even an ounce.

I like what he did in NYC in instituting the 311 public information & feedback system. He also banned smoking in bars & tried to limit access to large sugary sodas for kids. He also had many valuable public health initiatives, such as a law requiring calorie counts on restaurant menues. He is credited with adding 3 years to the lives of New Yorkers.

I didn't like that he used his wealth to overturn term limits & get himself a third term, but at least under his capable administration, we could all go to sleep & not worry about it too much. The alternative could have been worse

Bloomberg has been criticized by many Blacks for his support of Stop & Frisk policing policies, which some see as discriminatory. He has apologized for supporting it, but it may hurt him in some primaries. But in the general election, his strong Law & Order stance may help him. In NYC, crime under Bloomberg came down 80%

@Remiforce I remember everything in New York. He was interviewed when he announced running for Mayor of New York. When asked why, he said there were only 4 best jobs in the world.... The POTUS, the U.N. Secretary General, the World Bank President and Mayor of New York. The only job vacancy was the Mayor's..... Very smart. He was a Republican, then a Democrat, then an independent and Democrat again.

Excellent commentary.. I’d listened to him on the BBC’s: The Economist Asks, Sept. 26 interview (perhaps worth tracking down) … and felt he honestly & accurately described every situation about which he was asked.

Never realized how old he was until, I believe Stephen Colbert ‘joked’ about someone ‘even older’ entering the race … posting a very aged photo of him.

Where are/ went our modern day moderates? Afraid, if HRC couldn’t do it - nobody can? As is, I was very impressed by Mr. Bloomberg.

He's 77, but as far as I know in excellent health. He's slim & extremely insightful, very unlike that jerk in the White House. Hopefully he will pick a really good V.P. to back him should anything happen

Hes an elitist jerk [atr.org]

Just because he's extremely rich (54 billion) doesn't mean he's a jerk. If you listen to what he says, he seems incredible knowledgable & insightful. We shouldn't let our anti-rich bias prevent us from making the best choice for the country. Poor people can be jerks too

@Remiforce hes rich AND a jerk. Being rich isn't what defines his jerkiness, but id guess hiis jerkiness did make it easier for him to become rich
