Okay here's an easy one, what is the ONE best invention EVER and why.
Is it the wheel, the combustion engine, the computer... I'm going with the toilet. How many times do we use it a day and it keeps us from out houses and cold, rain etc

You and Red Green.

Without giving this question a lot of thought (hedging my bet), I vote for the printing press, which helped spread knowledge.

I am glad it got a mention anyway. It helped make the common person literate.

Electricity, you never realize how much you depend on it until you don't have it. Everything we use these day depends on it.

That was to be mine as well.
We wouldn't be able to read, on reply to this thread, if not for that. lol.

@MrDragon good one!

Water pump even if it hooked up to a windmill.

The spear, to facilitate hunting.

The Spear and fire came at the same time.... someone chipping flint for the spearhead saw sparks and thought .... wow ! fire....

@blzjz

  1. The first spear was likely a stick which was sharpened to a point using fire.
  2. Fire was discovered and utilized several centuries before it was learned how to start a fire from scratch.

Stone cutting tools.

I have two, but they go together...washer and dryer.

spoken like a true mom? 🙂

@lerlo yep, laundry became a daily chore.

It is a discovery a bit more than invention.... learning to make fire with a piece of flint .... that changed everything....

I think the thermos bottle has to be included in the great achievements in science. When you put hot liquid in it stays hot, when you put cold liquid in it stays cold... how does it know ? (stolen sorry)

Sadly for the rest of life, it was the projectile point, “thrown as a projectile for hunting.”

Love this post for all of different answers, gets me thinking.

So many critical inventions over thousands of years to get us where we are its hard to choose.

I would say the ability to grow our own food started the journey, I don't know if its the best one ever.

The vacuum tube

Women! Oh wait, there is no god to "invent" women so I guess Ill go with whiskey

You might take some of the answers and make a poll. I vote for computer.

too many possibilities I decided when I posted

@lerlo True that.

Electricity and the light bulb.

Thank you, American inventor Thomas Edison (light bulb) and Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (electricity).

The Atlatl. It gave humans the ability to kill at a distance, and evolved into the Bow. This ability radically changed our diet and was likely responsible for the increase in the protien/brain size equation we think is responsible for the modern human.

Evidence shows these are far back as 17,000 years ago.

Perhaps the Atlatl gave us the meat to give us the brain to harness fire and create wheels.

@Davesnothere good answer but does that mean it also led to the drone to allow us to kill from any distance, which can cause us more grief than we need? 😉

@JohnnyQB they certainly have their purposes, just not sure the weapon idea is good for the world...fun job though I bet

@lerlo I think that the evolution of weapons is a double edged blade, what may have saved us, kill us.

I'm with you.....anyone who has ever lived in areas where you needed to have septic tanks - and have them "fail".....oh yeah, I'm with you - and one step further. I'll vote for indoor plumbing and city sewer services every time! 😉

Of all the inventions in the world the most important is science.... All other inventions derive from it even before the inventors knew they were using it in coming up with their own inventions...

The teepee. Portable living with a fireplace for heat, flaps for cooling, raise it near a river for access to water, move it to relocate nearer to food sources and natural medicines...
