When you have dinner at a new restaurant, do you order something that you are familiar with or try something different?

I usually try something that I like to cook and if they do it better I will go back to try somethig different.

Usually order the familiar - typically seafood.

Something familiar - food allergies. Not the way I want to go out. lol

Otherwise I'd try new things.

Different every time. I had the goat at a nice Mexican restaurant in San Antonio last year. It was really good. I travel constantly so I'm always trying something new.

Usually, I will study their menu on line first, as a professional chef it is tough for me to try new places, dishes....first cause there isn't much I haven't made ot eaten, second if it is bad, I'll usually just eat it, if it is really bad, I send it back.

I look to see what is in it for something new and if it sounds good I will order it.

Several years ago I was attending a study session in DC and we tried a different ethnic restaurant every night. I loved it. I tried things I will never have the the opportunity to try again. You only live once and my employer was footing the bill.

I avoid eating at restaurants since they tend to add chemicals like MSG, to the food, make you tip the waiter instead of paying him a living wage, and I have no idea what's really organic or not.

Whole Foods used to have an organic food bar where you paid by the ounce.

If it is new restaurant, everything is new or a fresh spin on what you have had before.

That being said, sometimes I will order something I know, or will mix it up if I am bored.

Depends. If something is on the menu with inteeresting ingredients or an interesting combination of ingredients, I would be tempted to try it.

We are vegetarian. But we always ask the staff what they are most proud of. We tend to try what they think they do well. We usually aren't disappointed.

2

I don't try new things really at all

2

Depends either or, usually I don’t order fish at a place I don’t know it’s standard

Good question. I have two modes of ordering. The first is ordering what I call "restaurant food" - that is, food I am unlikely to make at home. I can make a damn good spaghetti bolognaise at home, so why order it when I am out? As opposed to blue swimmer crab, which I can't do at home. The second is the classic test - a meal I've ordered in so many restuarants that I know my benchmarks. My best example of that is massamum beef curry in Thai restaurants. That and larb. It is by those that I know if the Thai is any good. (Sidebar comment - the second best Thai I've ever had was in Bangkok. The best? In Copenhagen. Crazy, I know, but there it is.)

I was a chef for almost 16 years so always something new

I will be adventurous, I love trying new foods and new restaurants. If it is ethnic food that I am not familiar with I will ask the waitstaff for recommendations. I am not into hot spiced foods, but less spicy is OK. If it is a homestyle or American restaurant I will go with what I wouldn't usually cook for myself. If I have time before I get there I will check out the menu online (if I can) to get an idea of what I want to order.

If it's a restaurant I've never been to, I usually try something safe that I know I like, that way I get a feel of how the quality of their food is. If it ends up working out, then the next time I go there I tend to try new things I've never had.

1

Mexican food, I order enchiladas Christmas style to judge the chili any place else I pick something new.

1

I try to get something different every time, until I run out of menu items to try!

1

I am pretty adventurous, and like to try new things. I would most likely try something different.

1

I try to venture outside my comfort food zone, but some days I just want to stick with the usual.

1

These days because of stomach problems I try to stick to tp I know what won't bother my stomach. Noemally tho, adventurous

1

I always order whatever I feel like eating

1

In between. I'm not all that adventurous, but if I like the ingredients, individually, I'll try something new.

1

Depends. I usually research new restaurant adventures. Unless it's a diner or something cheap like that, then I almost always get a hamburger and fries. It's one of the few places I will induldge myself and order fries.
