Thoughts on extraterrestrial life? UFOs?

I am a skeptic about most pseudoscience. However, when it comes to extraterrestrial life, I do keep an open mind on the subject.

I had an experience when I was 18 years old. (Yes, I was sober). I was on my way to work at about 4:30 A.M. At the time I was living in a semi-rural area in Ohio, just outside Columbus. I was driving down a road, when something in the sky caught my eye in my left field of vision. I slowed down and saw a large triangular or arrowhead shaped object in the sky. It had steady red lights on its exterior. The object was nearly hovering, or maybe drifting slightly. It was just above a treeline. Unusually low for a large aircraft.

I was about a quarter mile away from it. I rolled down my window and didn't hear any noise at all. I observed it for about 10 seconds. I got the creeps and drove off. About 15 minutes later, I saw the same object, this time at a much higher elevation, probably several thousand feet, in the sky, and in the same westerly direction. I saw it for maybe 30 seconds and it seemed to fade away in the still dark morning sky. There were other people that saw it in the parking lot of the place I worked at. We were all like "WTF was that?"

This isn't to convince anybody. Just sharing an experience I had. I'm not sure what exactly I saw. It wasn't a commercial aircraft nor was it a conventional blimp. It was way too low and slow moving. Certainly may have been a military aircraft. As far as a drone, I'm not sure either but it was quite large, as in 737 large.

What prompted this was a video that people are talking about from a ring doorbell of a series of lights seen about 30 miles east of Cincinnati. Looks like something very high energy in the atmosphere.

I support the notion of extra terrestrial life, and that some of that life may be of a similar or greater intelligence than our own.
What I am not convinced of, is that they have or are visiting us here in person.
As a scientist I still keep an open mind.

Extraterrestrial life probably our UFOs not so much

Well, I don't know what you saw, it could be anything. UFOS? Who knows? It's a possibility just like any other.

I met a guy from Roswell a few years ago. He told me there is nothing that Roswell produces other than tumbleweeds. The Roswell ET was just a tourism scam. It put them on the map. That said, there is literally an unimaginable number of planets that can support some form of life. The distances involved would require some form of travel much much faster than the speed of light that has not even been imagined as yet. This is theoretically impossible. That said someone important once said, "We don't know what we don't know".

Right on.. we think we are smart, and we are. What knowledge we have really lets us understand our place in the universe. Life is rare and possible, and might be pervasive in this universe. Life on another earth like planet? Imagine what their evolutionary tree might be. Isn't life grand? Cheers. GROG

The people from Roswell did not say anything about something from space...it was the airforce that put that in the paper and they did not give a shit about tourism in Roswell.

Re: travel beyond the speed of light. "...is theoretically impossible." You have not been keep up with the science of Astrophysics. [space.com]

@dahermit There you go. You don't know what you don't know. Actually I still don't know. I'm not very good at comprehending quantum and wormhole theory. But thanks for the link.

I absolutely think that there is other life in the universe. And, most likely some of it is far more advanced than we are; however, I also think if we have been, or are being, visited by such life we would have some tangible, verifiable proof by now. And, I would love nothing more than to have absolute proof of extraterrestrial life. What you saw was a UFO, in that you and others did not know what it was; but my guess is that it was something human made.

Stealth blimp is the most likely explanation I can come up with.

Needle in a haystack. While there may be intelligent space faring races in the galaxy and they may have advanced technology that allows for instant travel between stars, the odds are stacked against them traveling here by chance. There are 400 billion stars (give or take a few million) with planets circling them. Chances of them "bumping" into earth are extreme. Also have to consider our location in the galaxy, consider us living in a rural area. However, there is always a chance one did at some point. So if we are on the map so to speak, they may swing by to check us out now and then. Nothing is impossible.

2

Not enough data for or against. I suspect there's aliens out there, but that they're too far away to come here or we can know about each other. As for sightings, all I know is there's likely a terrestrial explanation.

When you think about the age of the earth as per our galaxy and as per the universe according to scientists and the number of planets they’ve found in the Goldilocks zone and th further number estimated, sorry it could go on and on I would hazard a guess there are an infinite number of life forms. Fewer intelligent life forms, maybe also infinite and becoming so.

2

These are two separate questions, IMO.

Is there life out there other than here on the Big Blue Dot? It's a mathematical certainly. There's probably other life within just this galaxy (practically our back yard, in astronomical terms), let alone the entire universe.

However, there is no evidence of such, so it has to remain necessarily speculative and academic - with no practical value whatsoever in present terms.

People seeing UFOs, that's a different question. Unidentified, sure. Aliens, NO. Again, there is no evidence that aliens have been visiting Earth. All we have are anecdotal stories and untestable assertions.

When we get that signal of repeating primes, or something similar, give me a call. Then I'll pay attention.

@Omnedon - thank you for your words.

I agree with the concept that we should avoid absolutes. This is why I removed it from what I "feel" and framed it as a mathematical certainty and immediately branded it as speculative without evidence.

With a universe 13.8 lightyears across, the odds approach 1:1 that there is life beyond our pesky little globe. It only makes sense, which is why we "feel" this is right.

And for the record, I am putting aside the Drake equation, which is so speculative as to be useless.

However, while the chance of life elsewhere approaches 1:1, the chance of either of us finding each other is mathematically zero. I'm not holding my breath.

@LatentumCattus Sorry to be nit-picky, but that's 13.8 BILLION light years.

@starwatcher-al - Noted, Cattus stands corrected. And happily so, as it just brought the probabilities up by many orders of magnitude. Thank you kindly!

Just because one sees a UFO doesn't mean it is an alien... It just means you can't explain it at the time... Perhaps ever. I've seen many in my lifetime.

With life covering this planet in areas you'd never expect... I'd say the universe should be filled with life. How much is on our level or above? Who knows? But I'd say the interstellar distances are too great to be made with what we currently understand. Show me a hyper-drive spaceship or a wormhole that cuts the time into manageable segments and I might change my mind.

So I look at aliens like I do god and jesus.... No credible proof so far.

2

About UFO or other life form in other galaxies/universe/planets... it is truly irrelevant to me. it's all about how to fill my stomach 😀

2

You know, whenever I see something I can't explain my brain does not automatically leap to the abnormal (or supernatural). I would respond with 'that's freaky. It looks like a ufo. I wonder what it really is". That is the skeptic in me.

I do think it highly likely that there is life out there. I think it distinctly unlikely that they would visit and not make it to 60 minutes for an interview.

It really IS a ufo. Thing is, a ufo is simply an unidentified flying object. If a frisbee flies past your window too fast for you to realize what it is, it's a ufo. Now, the quesrion isn't whether ufos exist. The question is whether they are of extraterrestrial origin. I think not. But if it's a thing and you don't know what it is and it's flying, it's a ufo.

g

@genessa Yeah I knew that. I just used the term for convenience because people mostly think UFO means 'spaceship' but it was lazy.

@MsDemeanour lol yeah we have to correct this common misapprehension!

I find it as hard to believe there isn't other so-called intelligent life in the Universe as I find it hard to believe there is a God. Whether some of them have figured out how to travel around this galaxy or even the Universe, maybe so. A friend of mine and I saw a UFO years ago. We could not identify or explain what we saw, hence unidentified.

2

I believe that there must be other life somewhere. The universe is far too vast for there not to be. As far as there being an intelligent enough life form to be able to visit Earth, I doubt it.

Any extraterrestrial life would have to deal with the same physical limitations as us. Gravity, time, resources, etc are all working against us, no matter your place in the universe. Speaking of time, there has been a hell of a lot of it. Who even knows if other life exists right now as we do?

I don't doubt that you saw something. I just bet it was human in creation. What it really was could be anyone's guess.

Sounds a bit like the Stealth Bomber (B1?) maybe being tested. I have a friend who thinks they're from the future. I can buy that they are keeping an eye on our time so we don't blow it up and affect them. It might also be alien but either way it's not worth my time to consider. Like God, I can't know if I get the right answer so what's the point?

@rainmanjr I feel like thinking about the unknown is important. It's how people learn and grow. Those who are so certain of things (like the existence of God) are the ones who get left behind. It just helps to have a bit of realism when imagining things.

I personally think of video games. Especially the ones where things happen that wouldn't in "real life". I understand that they are just fantasy, but I still fully enjoy and appreciate them. Just because something may or may not be real doesn't mean you can't entertain the idea.

2

How long ago was this? There's a chance you could've spotted something like the TR3A Black Manta. Supposedly a large, stealth spy plane built by Lockheed Martin for the Air Force. They've built and tested a lot of wacky aircraft over the years.

This was 2003. I lean toward some kind of stealth blimp. But that raises questions about who they are and what they're up to.

2

I think extraterrestrial life is far more likely than not.
Perhaps not in our particular galaxy, but it seems reasonable that there
would be life on other planets, somewhere.

It doesn't seem reasonable to me that humans are the ONLY "intelligent" life
in the entire universe.
Especially given that we are who we are.

Who said we are intelligent??

@JackPedigo Wasn't me. Notice I put that word in quotation marks to signal my sarcasm.
😉

@KKGator No, but now I do. Great (but unintelligent) minds must think alike.

It is quite likely

AFB near Dayton has been keeping secrets for decades....boy Bush was the illegal Commander in Chief then ....maybe now, since gay Ellen deGeneres is sucking up to that war criminal her Ohio fans will brag about unusual stealth bomber flight characteristics?? There have been other fights to the moon from where and which millennia I don't know but travel beyond Jupiter TAKES YEARS for below the speed of light.....our species won't do well on vitamin D 3 supplements deprived of normal sunlight to our skin

Just curious...what makes her "gay Ellen DeGeneres" as opposed to just "Ellen DeGeneres?" Is her sexuality relevent to this discussion?

@EllenDale anyone sucking up to a war criminal theocrat like boy Bush deserves zero respect as a talk show host or advocate for any woman....I loved her work and shows for decades....why the hell is she elevating boy Bush out of the sewer of religion which harms gays harms science harms peace and harms truth telling ? Her ratings do not need a gangster who was never legally elected to the White House ....boy Bush had Atheist hero CPL Ranger Pat Tillman murdered in Afghanistan....

@EllenDale people silent in the closet need extra reasons to speak out otherwise they remain in the closet....that was my suggested reason to bust open censorship of secret USA flights by classified aircraft

With the distance between planets capable of supporting life being so vast, I find the chance of extra solar visitors to be unlikely in the extreme. I also find that most of the "experts" trying to promote alien visitors to be hucksters and charlatans.

1

As vast as the universe is it stands to reason that there must be other intelligent beings out there, both more and less advanced that us. But the vast expanse and distances between stars not to mention galaxies makes the idea of traversing those distances very unlikely. Even if we or they could travel at the speed of light whole planetary civilizations could rise and go extinct before they could be reached on a one way journey. There is also the problem that if the life that arose followed the pattern we exhibit the odds are greater they'd cause their own extinction before they could ever rise to the point of interstellar travel. Which leads to the idea that any race that could reach here from another star if they have evolved along similar lines would be far more interested in colonizing and replacing existing intelligences than trying to lift the likes of us with our racism, imagined superiority, religious bigotries to their level. Enslavement would be a more likely scenario.

1

I'll be honest and say I am a healthy skeptic but OPEN to the possibility. Statistically speaking it is hard for me to imagine that we are the only intelligent life in the universe. However, I am skeptical about any level of contact we have or have not had.

One of my favorite quotes about it comes from a favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie, Signs - and though this quote doesn't necessarily reference extraterrestrial life specifically, the quote is said in context to what appears to be UFO lights in different places across the globe:

"“People break down into two groups. When they experience something lucky, group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation is a fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See, what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, that sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?”

Great quote.
I'm in group number 1.5.
I DO think most things are pure coincidence, that the chances of any one particular thing happening is purely part of a random chain of events.
BUT in terms of a reward-punishment system not instituted by some 'god,' but as part of an overall interconnectedness of all matter and energy--'karma' if you will--I'm prone to think there may be something to it
Why?
Because it just SEEMS like it would be that way. With scientific underpinnings based on natural law.
So coincidence for most things, but either a positive or negative outcome for some things based on primal justice.
(Oh, and no doubt in my mind about the existence and presence of some kinds of extraterrestials conveyences.)

Sure, Aliens would come for trillions of miles across millions of years to come here with blinking lights and crashing into our planet.
Makes perfect sense.

There was a near miss a while back.

1

I think you would be ignorant to not even consider the idea. if a planet is 50,000,000,000 light-years away and it only has bacteria alive on it we would never know. if aliens are advanced enough to reach us why would they show themselves because they would be well ahead of us technologically just to reach us unseen? this planet we live on could be an experiment amongst many.up to now humans when they first find something new they kill it and dissect it. maybe we are a criminal planet. in a universe that never ends the possibilities never end. that's maths and physics.
