Know what sucks? When you find an attractive person on a dating profile, they meet most of the right criteria....and then you find out they smoke cigarettes.

And you have asthma, which makes that a problem.

I mean, I still want to get to know her, but.....

Anyway, mini-rant for the morning over.

Smoking's a filthy habit. It would actually be a bigger deal breaker for me than someone being a believer. It's borrowing trouble anyway.

Wouldn't mind if it was the occasional pot, but tobacco......even vaping is still nasty.

@JayOleck38 Yeah pot is not so bad, especially in moderation. My wife in fact vapes it for medicinal purposes. But she experimented with and immediately rejected tobacco smoking in her late teens.

Cigarette smoking would be a deal breaker for me. I quit 20 years ago and now can't stand to be around the smell. They say that nobody is a bigger snob about tobacco stink than a reformed smoker.

She didn’t say she was a smoker in her profile? I’ve smoked on and off over the years and update my profile accordingly. I stopped again this year, I’m really happy to say...

She saved it for last. I've never started. Only things I like smoked are salmon and cheese.

@JayOleck38 Brisket is good smoked, too 🙂. But yeah, it is a drag finding out someone you like is a smoker if you’re opposed. Does your profile stipulate non-smokers only?

@Bobbyzen No, it doesn't. I've been meaning to update it, but I live in a very rural town where dating is practically nonexistent. Online dating is more for entertainment value than anything else.

I refuse to be around a smoker. It's a deal-breaker.

My chain-smoking father died of cancer at 51. I have asthma, too. Walking past smokers, I hold my breath and run.

What's in secondhand smoke?

Secondhand smoke — also known as environmental tobacco smoke — includes the smoke that a smoker exhales (mainstream smoke) and the smoke that comes directly from the burning tobacco product (sidestream smoke). Secondhand smoke contains toxic chemicals, including:

Ammonia, used in cleaning products
Benzene, found in gasoline
Carbon monoxide, found in car exhaust
Chromium, used to make steel
Cyanide, used in chemical weapons
Formaldehyde, an industrial chemical
Polonium, a radioactive substance

It isn't just the smoke that's a concern, though. The residue that clings to a smoker's hair and clothing, as well as cushions, carpeting and other goods — sometimes referred to as thirdhand smoke — also can pose risks, especially for children.

How risky is secondhand smoke?

Secondhand smoke causes or contributes to serious health problems, including:

Cancer. Secondhand smoke is a known risk factor for lung cancer. In addition, secondhand smoke contains benzene — which increases the risk of leukemia.

Heart disease. Secondhand smoke damages blood vessels and interferes with circulation, which increases the risk of heart disease and heart attack.

Lung disease. Exposure to secondhand smoke can aggravate respiratory conditions, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Deal breaker. It's unattractive, expensive, and smells.

When I first read this I thought I had missed something. What about when you meet her to find out if she likes you? Until you meet her, smoking, religion, politics don't matter.

Why does everybody (except me) forget about this part?

As far as friendships go, no, but when it comes to dating.....yeah, smoking matters to me. Even my friends know to not do it around me. My brother in-law has to go out in the backyard to keep it away from mom and me.

I've turned down a few good prospects because they smoke. I've watched too many people die from smoking related diseases. No thanks. Aside from it being gross.

Good luck with your decision.

She seems nice. I don't discriminate like that when it comes to friends. Anything beyond that is a whole new ballgame.

@JayOleck38 I don't mind with friends - though they know not to smoke around me, but I
got the impression you're hoping for more than "friends"

@evergreen It seems I'm ALWAYS hoping for more than friends 😛 I have way too many friends who smoke or vape. Being around actors all the time it's like being around a walking tobacco factory.
