We probably have more gay people in government than anyone is willing to admit. In America the FBI had J. Edgar.

You lost me at ‘Gay’, what relevance had this, it’s his personal sexual preference, not a badge!!

While I think diversity in political candidates is important as far as race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., it should never be made more important than policy, character (such as whether they can be bought, or if they are overly-ambitious/opportunistic), and whether their record matches their rhetoric. Otherwise, voters get sidetracked by identity politics over substance in elections and we end with bad leaders who meet diversity standards, but nothing else positive.

Very well put @TomMcGiverin ....with the DNC rigging primaries for BidenS against Tulsi & Bernie are you ready for WWW.HOWIEHAWKINS.US peace through Green jobs ? Tulsi yesterday introduced H Res 787 a ubi for all USA citizens 1000 per month during this coronovirus crisis under the Stafford Law ordered by TrumpOLINI 2day

Good, it’s always useful for people to have exposure to alternatives. But also frustrating as polarities in government are less useful in the long term than a strong, more middling party, that represent a majority and work for the good of the Country as a whole.
So many political systems seem to fickle -y swing from left to right after a few years undoing each other’s work.
When are the right going to accept that having some profit making businesses in their portfolio, as well as money guzzling social services could help supplement taxes? Instead of trying to privatise services that ethically should not be making a profit, like nursing homes.

I thought Pete Buttigieg made an excellent candidate in the Democratic Primary. He had impressive educational background, impressive military service, he was well spoken and steady when fielding criticism, etc. I would have rather he had a bit more experience in office although being mayor isn't a bad start. I wouldn't mind seeing Buttigieg serving in politics in the future. Nothing about a gay person is necessarily disqualifying for political leadership. We do ourselves a disservice by disqualifying them out of hand simply for being gay. Without knowing much about Robert Biedron of Poland (just from this article) I hope he can do something to counter the right wing extremism on the rise in Poland.

I think you are totally wrong about Mayor Wall Street Pete. He is a corrupt CIA spook who had nothing positive to offer the US. See Athena's comment above. He is a poster child for what is wrong with people getting hung up on identity politics.

@TomMcGiverin - You and Athena may be correct about Buttigieg; what I had read about him was generally positive but I've also been so sickened by Trump that I found I have had difficulty concentrating on politics this election.

My more general point, however, is not diminished by our difference of opinion about Buttigieg. Being gay provides no greater qualification for political leadership than it provides a disqualification. It simply is not an important aspect in terms of an individual's character traits important for political leadership.

@RussRAB As I said above, to me character is a separate thing from identity politics. Identity politics is bad for our democracy because it encourages tribalism, which is making our political choices too much on whether a candidate is part of our "tribe" by being gay, the same gender or race, etc. My prime example in the US is all the black voters, mainly older blacks, who voted for Biden on Tue., mainly because Biden was Obama's VP, so these blacks transferred their loyalty to Biden, even tho Biden's record does not show great loyalty or alliance towards blacks on policy. But tribalism trumps policy and character in this case. Same thing four years ago with blacks who voted for Hillary in the primaries only because her husband Bill was popular with blacks. Neither Clinton, Bill or Hillary, nor Obama or Biden ever did that much for the economic situations of most working class black people, but they did fill their cabinets with black people and helped the black upper class. But working class blacks seem content to settle for the scraps of having people who look like them in those prez administrations because of their tribal loyalty. Suckers......

@TomMcGiverin - I think a better example of tribalism and identity politics is found on the right. Since red states by far receive more in federal tax money than they contribute, the policies of Republican administrations to cut services harms those states they count on most for support. Religion is one of the foundational forms to maintain control over their red tribe.

@RussRAB True.

I hope he does well.

I'm not a "thoughts and prayers" guy, so I'm just sending good vibes in Biedron's direction. May he prevail! 🙂

Don't tell me... you decided to endorse him.

Well, shit. One more country to be more advanced than us.

It is high time that the International School of Lies lost its stranglehold on Poland.

Good. Take no crap.
