Max von Sydow died today at the age of 90.

The Swedish actor appeared in more than a hundred films including numerous Hollywood blockbusters such as The Exorcist in which he plays Father Lankester Merrin, as well as James Bond as Blofeld. Perhaps his greatest character, however, was the knight Antonius Block who plays chess with Death in The Seventh Seal, one of eleven films he made with the highly influential director Ingmar Bergman.

He played a great crazy artist in Hanna and her Sisters.

He played a convincing Nazi assassin very well in "The Brass Target" (1977) -- out to get General Patton. The scene where the gunsmith has gone the extra mile for him, proudly shows off his craftsmanship in a target shoot, and is repaid by being the impromptu guinea pig. Hard to believe he was only in his mid-forties then, twenty years after his Bergman run. And who can forget his title role as "The Exorcist" (1974)?
