Since dating is no longer really possible in the traditional sense because of all the isolation measures in effect across the country & world, how many people would be interested in a months long social experiment in where you live with a complete stranger, just so you don't both go insane from all this lack of being able to do a simple thing like hug a friend?

I think I'll hang with the dogs.

Hmm, let me see? A proposal like that? My guess would be nil.

4

I think I’ll stick with my housemates, they’re pretty decent sorts 😉

4

My place is too small for that but I would be open to do it. Although, anti-social as I am, I'll be just fine... Lol!!! Especially if I start working from home...

4

No thanks. I’ll continue living just with my cats as I’ve done for years.

I am already a quarantine partner, but heck let's go for it.

This kinda happened with my ex. When we met she let out rooms to long-term students but later went on to short stay foreign ones. My daughter has grown up with a stream of strangers inhabiting her living space.
The irony is that with all these opportunities, she never learned any languages. Yet now when her mom has moved to a smaller house and stopped this. She has started studying travel and tourism which includes languages.

I live with 7 people. 5 adults and two children. It's been quite the experience. When we want to socialize we do. When we don't, we hibernate in our rooms. It is working with only a few incidents of calamity.
What surprises me is how well the toddler does in this environment. She is loved by so many people under one roof and it shows. She is super confident. When she plays with her dolls she will call them "honey" and "sweetie" because that what we all call her.

I sometimes wonder if our being forced to stay at home with nowhere to go, no sports to watch, and not a whole lot left to do will lead to a spike in the number of babies born about nine months from now. I mean, who wants to go out and buy condoms during an epidemic, right? Maybe we're living in a kind of social experiment, like the New York City blackout.

the name for those born 9 months from now will be the coroniell's. This isn't a social experiment. It's a pandemic brought on by an ignorant presidents lust for power and greed

@joeandbarb The pandemic would have occurred, with or without greed and lust. It was born in the natural world and spread by human contact--nature finds a way. Whether or not we want to call human behavior during great blackout of 1965 or the 2020 pandemic a 'social experiment,' it provides social scientists with an opportunity, just the same.

@p-nullifidian all true but if we had been better prepared it would have mitigated the effects and the death toll would be much lower

@joeandbarb Absolutely! We are now learning that, as early as last November, briefings on the contagion and its potential spread were prepared by the National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI) and were provided to the government, including DIA and the White House. Did you know that Trump played the fiddle?

I went insane long ago due to lack of closeness. Some of you have new territory to discover. Isolation isn't fatal, it just feels that way.

3

I personally do not want anyone, or anything, in my home for longer than a few days, that I have feed, cleanup after, take care of: animal, vegetable or mineral.

3

Humm it might work depending on the people involved. But you have set no criteria. Who is the stranger. What gender, nationality, age, language, religion or not. Where are you going to live. Your home, their's or some other place. How do you split living costs? Lots to think about besides hugging.
But if you find a stranger and try it - let us know how it works out.

It should be noted that I am a watcher of the show Big Brother, so basically that

Living with a total stranger sounds far more insane than being alone. I enjoy my own company.

I would be the first to volunteer!
Social isolation, even before the onset of this virus, is leading to extreme loneliness, depression and even death (some call them "deaths of despair" and they include overdoses and suicide)
We are social beings but we're also quite complicated; the temptation to shy away from social interaction is strong when we are faced with the idea of letting others see who we really are. I believe most people have these fears. I don't intend to isolate myself in my older years. Instead I hope to remain active and aware and fun, and reach out to lonely souls in need of a smile!

Bah Humbug! Get a dog or cat, or both!

Getting a pet is a good idea if you can, but don't forget

Folks who seem to have more social interaction in their twilight years have always looked younger to me.

Naw..but would be interested in people picking someone and texting back and forth for a month to get to know one another better and maybe THEN after this mess is over going on an actual date.

2

Only one month?

We have no idea how long we're going to be socially isolating right now, and this is really just a thought experiment, so take your pick. You can always break the quarantine once you are sick of your companion, and go back isolating at home or a real shelter.

My sister, in her late fifties, and living across the state from a siblings, took in her cleaning lady to live with her about three years ago. My sister was lonely and enjoyed the conversations with her cleaning lady and thought it would be great having her live with her and it would help the cleaning lady out. The cleaning lady has all types of crazy mental issues, all kinds of medical issues, issues of any type you can think of. She has called the police on my sister, claiming that my sister was abusing her, drank my sister's wine to excess, has verbally abused my sister till my sister goes out into her garage and just sits in her car and cries and has contemplated suicide because of this crazy woman's behavior. But my sister is a helper and a giver and can't even consider turning this woman out because " she would be homeless ". Now, on top of it all, this lady is waiting for results of testing for the Corona virus. If she ends up positive and has given the virus to my sister, that will just be the freaking icing on the cake. We can't even call my sister and talk to her one-on-one because she has to put the phone on speaker so that the crazy lady doesn't think that we're talking about her. It's so irritating. We've told her and told her that she is enabling her and being used. And my sister is a very intelligent woman who had a wonderful job has a nice retirement and a beautiful home. Evidently intelligence doesn't mean you have good common sense.

Cabin Fever experiments?

If you take out the hugging then you have the same as college roommates or army barracks. Or you may want to leave the hugging each to his or her own.

1

Hmmm. Sounds like the basis for a reality style game show. 🤔

This makes no sense .... just test strangers and friends alike before living with them hugging them or marrying any of them to prevent viral infections

I have lived with a complete stranger, then we got to know one another, she got educated and evolved and I wanted to settle down while she wanted to move on. We are divorced now and she has an apartment in Dallas while I still have my same half acre of land living in a small town. We texted briefly on Christmas. I'm not sure she understands how I know where she is.
