In the Mormon church they call them "garments, which are worn as underwear that covers the trunk of ht ebody the thighs and upper arms. Supposedly, it gives them extra protection from harm. They have to go through a certain temple ceremony to wear them and receive "protection" though.
I see it as a superstition particular to Mormons.
