I hadn't made the connection before, but I was listening to an interview on NPR the other day. In it the subject of the interview pointed out; that the whole industry of science denial, and it is a large segment of corporate public relations, is based on the model created by the tobacco industry. There is a lot of capital backing the dissemination of doubt.

I've heard some things about that lately too. I think it's all just beginning to come out. Unfortunately we're all so dug into our sides now that many will just choose not to believe it.

@MsAl That's the problem we have when people identify with their beliefs. It's difficult, but we have to learn to distinguish between what we believe and what we know.

@JimG I see the same problem every time a piece of satire or actual fake news is posted on one of my liberal social media areas. My liberal atheist cohorts think of themselves as more thoughtful and smarter and I tend to agree. I am reminded by these instances that we are not immune. These things get shared and commented on as real by almost everyone just because they agree with the political view.

I confess I have to admit in all fairness, I've made the mistake of disseminating information that later proved to be untrue. I now find that I must be even more skeptical of news that confirms what I think.

Isn't it really screwed up that people who support a certain political figure are more pissed off when people point out his lies than they are when he lies?

Truly, there is a lot of capital backing the dissemination of doubt.
It will have consequences; it’s a form of Artificial Selection.

@JimG I am pretty sure there are very few people who have not made the same mistake.

It's a miracle we ever get to the truth.

Our Atheism is no miracle....we apply critical thinking at will demanding proof and replicability .....if only Atheist Democrats would critically examine all fascist corporatist government policies as we do obvious theocracy and rapist priests
