In the time of COVID 19 pandemic - A Troubadour's Lament for Toulouse in the 1348 Plague played & sung by David Yardley who also composed the music:
"Marvel not at the mortality and famine that we witness,
For evil thoughts and deceit are among us,
Infecting the air, such that the air, heavily infected, corrupts people;
Death is all around, and food and goods become corrupted also,
and in short supply in every region.
These are brutal and disordered times,
In the whole world there is great poverty;
But we pray for swift healing from our failings."
This is absolutely beautiful! the Dorian mode lends itself well to sorrow. Strangely enough, I just came from my studio, where I was composing a piece on my harp in the same key, after reading some passages from Defoe's "A Journal of the Plague Year". The uncertainty and fragility of life speak well through music.
