I am almost done reading this book. Highly recommend it. The book is derived from the notebooks of author Vasily Grossman, a correspondent for a Russian newspaper embedded in the front lines as the Red Army drove Hitler’s forces out of Russia clear to Berlin. Stalingrad, Kiev, Warsaw, he witnessed and described the atrocities of all sides. The murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews in Ukraine and Poland in the ghetto’s and death camps. The systematic murder of Poles and Gypsies, mistreatment of civilians of both sides from both armies.
Reading this (his description of the Treblinca death camp Routine operations is more horrific than watching Schindler’s List) makes you wonder how humans who did these atrocities could return to living normal, everyday lives after the war. And how what were probable respectable men before the war could become the animals they were for the six or more years Hitler controlled their brains. And on a related note, the damage followers of Trump could inflict if he chooses to push his fan club to save his presidency.
