After lobbying, Catholic Church won $1.4B in virus aid

"The U.S. Roman Catholic Church used a special and unprecedented exemption from federal rules to amass at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed coronavirus aid, with many millions going to dioceses that have paid huge settlements or sought bankruptcy protection because of clergy sexual abuse cover-ups."

Other sources report the loans could exceed $3.5 billion.

Why are religious organizations getting money?

barjoe Level 9 July 11, 2020

They were approved for small business loans from the pandemic. I believe it is pandering by the GOP for the political support churches have given Trump and Republicons. If they can be considered businesses to receive tax money, then they should be paying taxes.

@RussRAB I know the "rationale" for giving the money. How many truly needy business for deprived so these thieves could get their money.

@barjoe - Good Question.

Isn't this sort of like saying the behavior is really OK?

I think so. We as taxpayers are now contributing to the funding of the Catholic church's financial obligation for protecting and perpetuating the behavior of pedophile priests.
