If it's on the Internet,it must be true, right? A recent post has me thinking about how few people actually verify anything they read on the internet, especially on Russia's favorite news outlet -FaceBook. There's so much propaganda, junk science and generally dum rumors out there. Who fact checks things they read before commenting?

I do. The trouble is at times it can be difficult to determine who's telling the truth, and who has other motives. Over the years I've sat back and observed that most people do not like having their beliefs challenged. Whenever a viewpoint comes up that the particular individual does not favor, right away the other side is wrong, and on and on it goes...

Snopes.com a trusted fact checker of urban legends did something interesting a while back. They posted some pretty big claims such as Mr. Ed actually being a Zebra.

The Repository Of Lost Legends (TROLL) was what they called. The did expose it, but wanted to point out that while common sense suggests we need to check things, we often don't. We should all be cautious about what we read [snopes.com]

Of course, that assumes one cares about getting things right as opposed to just seeking and agreeing with ideas that support your conclusion (aka confirmation bias).

I trust the news from ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, PBS, Washington Post, NY Times, Huffington Post, and Boston Globe. Nothing else.

I might question the biases of HuffPo and MSNBC to some extent (certainly as far as opinion reporting), the thing to watch for in any media is the tripping themselves up going for the scoop.

Faux News is for narrow minded people

It's true it's all true they couldn't post it it wasn't.

I do - as best as I can.

If I can't find a source or verify stuff, it stays put. If it's bullshit I'll call it out - and have been unfriended by some before now for questioning their shares.

I do. But by the time I'm done that same post will have been shared a few thousand times, probably.

There is an adage that might apply (believe half of what you see and nothing that you hear)

I don't believe half of the things I see on there. Especially FB.

Most intelligent and critical thinking people.

Apparently, very few. I'm so exasperated right now I can barely stand it.

How do you know you can trust the fact checkers?

I usually find a couple of sources not related to each other and go with them. Contrary to whiny rightwingers, Snopes tends to be good.
