Sort of depends on what you like to listen to.

I’ve given this some thought ... overall, I can’t decide. I think it depends on the time period.

Doesn't anyone listen to classical anymore? From America, I love Gershwin, Barber & Copeland. From Great Britain, I love Britten. It's all good.

2

I love music from both countries. However, I think that American music has shaped a large proportion of the music coming out of the U.K. The Blues was a driving force for a lot of classic rock that came out of England in the 50's and 60's. Like the Beatles, Clapton, Zeppelin just to name a few.

JAMAICA, my personal hero ( one ROBERT MARLEY) hailed from this island and was a world changer.

A huge chunk of the music I play is said to have come from Ireland. That said I heard it first and then learned it in England and often from English musicians. I often play it on a banjo that was made in Cornwall but the instrument itself came to england via Ireland, America and probably originated in Africa. Sometimes I play it on a simple system Irish flute which almost certainly originated in England. And we won't talk about my German melodeon with the peculiar English tuning... 🙂
And that's what I love about music and musicians. We know no borders. If we like a tune or an instrument we'll play it. And long may it continue

Both.

Europe in general produces far more excellent artists than the US market does, and it has since the 1970's. In fact, it's not even a contest.

While Europe continues to produce artists which I do not hesitate to place in my collection next to rock icons such as Jethro Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Marillion, Black Sabbath and Genesis, the United States is mired in churning out bland, cookie cutter tweenie pop singers and generic screamo bands.

If by Europe, you mean the British Invasion of the 60's and 70's, then I'm with you in the first paragraph. Then, you put Jethro Tull, Yes, Judas Priest and Genesis in there as something special, now I'm confused.
I always have and always will avoid the pop chart of any decade. Just because today's technology can manipulate a voice and a beat that has you tapping your foot does not equate artistry.

Europe is still producing far better rock and roll bands than we are here in the United States. Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Kaiser Chiefs, Ghost BC, Ayreon, Muse, Volbeat, Epica, Arctic Monkeys, Rammstein. Just a few of the great bands that Europe has produced over the past 25 years.

I'd struggle to count on one hand the number of stand out rock and roll bands that the US has produced in the past 25 years.

IN my generation it was the UK.

Clearly the UK if we are considering the music produced during my lifetime and in the genre of what I find appealing.....but if you are asking about historically the best music ever produced... well I am not qualified to answer .... would venture a wild guess and say Germany? But I’m not sure where Bach, Betoven , Mozart, and the like lived while writing the obviously “best music ever produced”. Coming back to the contemporary music we are all familiar with, my vote for the UK is supported with the obvious, UK= The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, LED Zeppelin, The Who, and Pink Floyd....that’s just the short list... and if I were to try and find 5 American music contributions.... well it would be almost impossible to come up with even two names that could bump any of those five out of the top of the list.... and even if they could I did not even mention Jimi Hendricks and several others .... there was (and is) great music produced here, but not even close to the volume of the UK in my humble opinion ( what? Elvis?, Chuck Berry?, Lynard Skynard , Micheal Jackson? ) there Are two “Americans” that might, but it’s all subjunctive and based on personal tastes right? Oh, my two candidates for Americans who contributed at a very high level....Americans = Neil Young , (Canada) and Tom Petty, (USA).... just sayin’.....?
P. S. WELL DAMN! I guess Neil could and should be considered U. K. Huh? Don’t they still have a English Queen’s pic on their money?.....

In the period from the Beatles to the Clash. The UK had the edge but the US is the home of popular music. From jazz, though blues to rock n roll. Considering the differances in population, we `ve done rather well.

I think it's a pendulum thing. I think at certain times the music of each country has influenced the other one.

USA hands down. What would the current state of music be like without the likes of Scott Joplin and Louis Armstrong?

A bit of both

They have both produced great music. Don't forget all of the Latin countries. The US has more in some styles of popular music, but also has a whole lot more people. More people means a much larger pool of talent.

I've listened to a lot of European music mostly German rock, a few french rock, although skrewdriver is a racist band from UK I did like it before I realized what it was. But I would have to say my favorite would be Russian hip hop/rap. Had a friend introduce me to it about 5-6 years ago been hooked ever since. Каспийский гурз, КАПА, Andy Rey - Навсегда, GREAT MUSIC!!!!!!!!

Do you speak all those languages? I haven't listened to music from non-English speaking countries because lyrics are a large of a song to me.

@2TuffTony I have taken German many years ago I can read it better than hearing it, I took french in highschool as well before I switched to German. I am currently learning Russian I plan to go to Moscow next year. German music is very broken I guess I would say, words are harder to rhyme so sometimes they don't make a lot of sense to me but I get somewhat of an understanding.

I'm envious. The mother of my son was one half Mexican American origin. Her father would not allow her and the other siblings to learn their mother's native language. I see that as a loss to my son and his mother.

@2TuffTony that sucks especially because it's easier to learn at a younger age. On the up side it's never too late for knowledge

Both equally have produced many of my favorites ranging in a broad spectrum of genres.

"Best" is too subjective. It depends on the person's tastes and background.

I prefer US music overall because it's a much bigger and more diverse country, with more ethnic influences, generally speaking-including British music influences.

Zimbabwe death metat fo sure.

Lot of good from all over the world. Let's just sit back, listen, and enjoy what we like, no matter where it originated.

Once upon a time, a british folk singer/writer called Ewan MacCall (father of Kirsty) met a beautiful American folk singer/writer called Peggy Seeger (half sister of Pete). These two were spiritual descendants of Woody Guthrie. The result was a great love affair and marriage starting with this song.

So that`s how it goes, you bounce off us and we bounce off you
