I sometime walk with a woman who is a churcher. But we never talk religion on our walks. Recently, we were messaging back and forth and she mentioned that she had just come home from church. That's when I told her I was an atheist who grew up in a Jewish household. That surprised her.
Then I told her I give my charity directly to charities and not to a religious organization. This is what stumped her and got her thinking. I said, "It cuts out the middle man."
So priests, ministers, rabbis, and other charlatans are just middle men taking a piece of the action.

Why not give it straight to the homeless person on the street or buy them a brick home built by true masons? Why give to "charities" that are all modeled as 501☕ non-profit no different than "religious " organizations.

The scourge of the "middle man" is at the core of most religions. Seems this deity they're pushing can't speak directly to the individual without an interpreter--one who insists on being paid!

Studies show that non believers are more generous than religious people.

Giving to charities is a good thing to do. Many people are surprised when an atheist gives to charities.

This is true. In my church daze I used to almost cry about the starving and homeless or those with physical deformities. I wanted to give money for them so badly. They are still around today and will likely always be around. The middle men in this are still pushing their stories and also taking their cut of the donated money, and doing it tax free.

A very poignant and prime example is the St. Vincent De Paul Charity/Op shops system.
I know quite well of numerous people who have DONATED clothing, etc, etc, to St. Vinnies totally FREE and a few days/weeks later have seen the exact items being SOLD for almost Retail prices.
St. Vinnies, as we call it here, is operated mainly by Volunteer staff, e.g. FREE of Wages, etc, gets 100% of its stocks FREE of charge so WHY does it need to charge over-inflated prices for what it gets for FREE when dealing with those most in need?

Oh trust me they take more than just a "piece of the action," they take the Lion's share.

Tax free.

Exactly.

They are more than just middle men, they are parasites . . . . especially the televangelists.

As a bookkeeper, She would under stand the concept of a middle man best.

Well, you gave her something to think about.

Taking most of the action.

It’s good that you felt comfortable having that conversation and it hasn’t damaged your relationship. Really nice to hear that she actually listened and thought about it too 🙂

Religion can be more addictive than drugs or gambling. And just as difficult to break away or rehabilitate.

Religion is a scam. The monotheistic scam, for just 10% you get resurrection, an eternal body and soul, and an eternity with dad, in Heaven!! It is amazing how many people it takes to keep the money pouring in. GROG

They have always been a bunch of charlatans that prey upon the poor, the weak minded and the gullible - they embody sloth (apparently a sin) because they do no productive work but are instead parasites, feeding on the rest of society.

SAPROPHYTES ...a better example I think

@Redneckliberal Maybe both? Parasites feed on the living, while saprophytes feed on the dead, and when it comes to most religions, donations and endowments are gladly accepted from any source.

@p-nullifidian from my college bio class(eons ago!)...saprophyte..a lower life form that survives by feeding on the fecal matter of higher life forms.....seems fitting

@p-nullifidian There must have been a sainthood in it for the priest who thought up Pergatory, just dig a little deeper and we'll pray pervy old Uncle Bob away from Hell and closer to Heaven, it's just a matter of money.

@Redneckliberal you mean likeTrump

@Redneckliberal like Trump
