Prayer
Because an omnipotent god knows what you want and need, but really likes to hear you beg for it.

If there is a god, he's a vindictive douchebag

Technically this is right, in the true sense of the word. It even has common usage in this vein: β€œpray tell...” Substituting wish for β€œpray” basically means the same thing. If I wish you a speedy recovery or pray for your speedy recovery, am I not saying the same thing?
Only when prayer becomes an obsession, replacing actions, thoughtfulness and true caring does it devolve into the current abuse of the word and what it stands for.

To me, when prayer is putting one's faith in some entity that is going to improve their life, grant their wishes, and give them the gift of eternity , that's when it becomes ridiculous magical thinking.
