The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn has been in the news of late. Where I live it's been overcast so I'm grateful for the pictures that were sent my way (see attached). Did any of you see it? Many were calling it the 'Christmas Star' as if there was some magic attached to it. The real magic if you want to call it that, is that we humans are able to precisely calculate such events through physics.
In his book, 'The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark', Carl Sagan talks about the allure of magic and the ways we are seduced into it's realm and the toll it takes on civilization. Here are a few quotes from his book:
“For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring".
”Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.”
If you've never read the book I hope you will consider doing so ... it is regarded to be one of the most important books ever written.

Lots of people think a conjunction means no separation between the visible discs (a partial eclipse) which only happens with Saturn and Jupiter at intervals of tens of thousands of years.

It's a conjunction of two different gods from two different mythologies that are are confusingly the same.
Saturn is the Roman version of the Greek Titan Cronus who was the father of the Gods but didn't want kids so he'd swallow them all as they were born, but the wife of Cronus loved her children and switched the first with a large rock then kept him in a secret place to be raised as Zeus, who ultimately defeated his father and freed his brothers and sisters, Zeus in Roman is Jupiter.
So from an astrological vantage point it's like misogynistic overload, double the toxic masculinity, just as the world faces the Trump toxic masculinity as well as toxic masculine movements all over the world. An unfortunate coincidence that many will take as evidence.
After all it's one hell of a coincidence.

Seems we both love Greek mythology! Thanks!

So wonderful. No telescope for me or anything, but I did get to go look at it from the reservoir with the naked eye.
