Philosophy post: “Optimistic Nihilism”
I don’t normally resonate with single philosophies but this one is close. Anyone feel the same?
A philosophy that posits ultimate freedom in the midst of, and solely enabled by, the utter meaninglessness of existence: “If our life is the only thing we get to experience, then it’s the only thing that matters. If the universe has no principles, then the only principles relevant are the ones we decide on. If the universe has no purpose, then we get to dictate what its purpose is.”
What do you think of this philosophy?
Maybe pessimistic or like playing devils advocate to make a point but let me point out the main summary of video as you wrote in post, "...If the universe has no purpose, then we get to dictate what its purpose is.”
An opposition point: we have very little, freedom, to "dictate".
Those people that has died while being forced by others to live as slaves, or those victims, casualties of war. They for sure didn't have the wherewithal to dictate their lifestyle, or even their lifestyle end.
I don't think a philosophy, that would seem ok if there were true freedom even, could really be practical in such a world where there is such lack of freedom to ultimately dictate ones own life fully.
Living even in modern American for example: 10,000 years ago let's say one man does some to another man, his family or possessions, in that the victim might could defensely fight the aggressor to the point of the aggressor being killed by the victim. This might could of been moreso freely done back then, where as now, if a person, under American law, takes "the law" into into their own hands, or "dictates" themselves as being judge and jury over an aggressor then the victim now days would be viewed as the person in violation of the modern law and their freedom then further restrained or them but to capital punishment death.
Not getting into any sort of free will debate, I think given circumstances, people do have freedom to choose things yet, with such things as modern laws as I tried to give analogy, what we can dictate for ourselves is still limited or constrained at by the fact others, people, exist as well.
If that is not at least clear as mud, then maybe when I wake up in the morning I would not be so tired and could explain better.
