US Politics - Most of the Republican senators have sacrificed their minds and souls to whatever botched pseudo-principled dead-end that they occupy, but even if they do not vote for conviction during the impeachment proceedings, I take comfort that at least they are having to sit through a thoughtful prosecution by the House team. They will not be able to say (such Senators as Senator Cruz will try to do) that the House did not prove its case.

There are many reasons that former President Trump should be barred from holding further office, barred from the Republican Party, and sent to prison, and there will not be time to pursue all of those reasons in the years to come, and we cannot necessarily expect that Mr. Trump will be convicted under the Impeachment system, or that he will be convicted of anything under the conventional criminal justice system.

Still, even assuming an impeachment conviction is not attained, as a matter of principle, I like that some are trying for this. There were plenty of crimes he ikely committed, as President, but this one was horrible, and a direct attack on the rule of law itself, and as a country I think we need to defend the rule of law by going through this process even if some Republican Senators refuse to see that.

Republican senator may immorally and un-patriotically refuse to convict Trump; but I am convinced that more than a few American citizens will b convinced by the evidence presented. And, to the detriment of those immoral senators , that will b held against the senators.

Yes, I did hear a point made today in the commentary that popular support for conviction in this case is higher than the last time. If true (and I'm not even sure I remember what I heard correctly) I think that counts for something, and the remaining GOP darned well better think before voting.

A key point for me throughout the last four years has been, and continues to be, that fundamentally I hold not only Presidents and legislators responsible (at some level, to some degree) for both good and bad, of omission and commission, but also myself and our fellow citizens. We are all, by law, in this together.

So, when I see a GOP legislator voting with reckless disregard for the US and its future, I think to myself that the thousands and millions of citizens who have partial influence and input to that legislator are doing a very poor (recklessly incompetent) job.

Because conviction is still in question it feels necessary for me to point this out to ALL gop/MAGA: Our current President, the man with the power to incite insurrection and murder police, is a Democrat. I would authorize that President to not lose office, or allow the seating of ANY gop/MAGA who managed to get elected (which wouldn't be likely under the rules I'd create for elections), BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. One of us is going to live by armed threat and legal murder and I'd rather it not be me. If you don't insist on conviction then that would be your consequence. Suck on it.
