Best country? 40 to 50 years ago I believed that the United States was the best country in the world, it led the world in education etc. It is nowhere close to the best country in the world now, probably the most violent country in the world, way down in education, poverty is up etc. So which is the best country in the world? Please give your opinion and the reasons.

It largely depends on what lifestyle you want and what you have grown accustomed to. I've been to 20 countries outside the US. Most of the citizens I met in each country think their's is the best for them.

They don't eat bats or dogs there as well.

there are certainly things we need to learn from others

So do you want to answer the question?

@lerlo im not sure I don't wanna move but there are better places norwegan countries the ppl are not as obsessed with stuff and they often don't lock doors and they can leave sleeping babies outside without worry and their drug policies sure work better than ours and other things workers don't have to take jobs they don't like and still get a salary we could learn

@lerlo are you always a dick?

Canada because I live here. Been to over a hundred countries. Because of covid and wealthy cults maddness a few places in South America would be finer. Its about preferences. Stay away from the US

There is nothing that breeds complacency more quickly, than the belief that you are the best at something. So you make no effort and then one day you turn round and find that the world has left you behind. Hubris is the parent of apathy.

Want to answer the question?

@lerlo For education perhaps Switzerland, for human happiness maybe Denmark.

But always keep in mind the wisdom of Oliver Goldsmith.

"How wide the limits stand Between a splendid and a happy land.” By which he means that the greatness of countries, is built on the misery of their peoples, and that it is impossible for a country to be a 'world leader' and have a happy people.

@Fernapple well I happen to disagree with him because intuitively it makes no sense. When the US used to have the biggest economy, no continual mass shootings, be number one in the world in education and on and on, there is a reason people wanted to live here from other countries. You'll never make everyone happy.

@lerlo I think that mass shootings and the decline in education are very much the symptoms of the unhappiness which went before , and I do not recall that the US was ever number one in education.

@Fernapple apparently you're not old enough 😉

@lerlo I am sixty four. And I remember the so called happy days of the sixties and seventies, and the fact that most people lived in misery, and that the glories of those times only existed for the white middle class, at the expence of everyone else, both sides of the Atlantic.

@Fernapple we were number one in education 20 years ago

It’s not that the US is the best country, it’s what we’ve been taught. It’s what we’re constantly told, therefore we believe it. We’re the egotistic nation that can have the lowest academics score, yet we don’t care and it doesn’t matter because of the “I’m ‘Merican” mentality.

I felt that same way myself 30 or so years ago. That was a time I knew little about European or Scandinavia or any other country for that matter.

IMO there is no “Best” Country. They all have their issues and problems, some more than others. What angers me is that you have smaller countries struggling to make themselves world powers, where this one is in a mad rush to the bottom. For that reason alone is why this isn’t the “Greatest” one.

Well it's clear that the Scandinavian countries do not have the violence we have. And Finland, Sweden and Denmark have better literacy than we do. I can certainly vouch for the women in Sweden... 🙂 Maybe back when our democracy wasnt being attacked we had an argument, but when 30% of the country is anti-immigrant, the people that built the country, we have a serious problem.

@lerlo i agree about the immigration issue. I grew up in Brooklyn in an area where there were a lot of Blacks, Oriental, Spanish and white lived and even where I am now it’s very diverse. Immigration is an issue with a certain segment that doesn’t like the fact that America is changing and we all know who those people are.

@CuddyCruiser you forget all about the white immigrants that came over

@lerio It's bad enough all these foreigners trash the United States. Troublesome to see an American who doesn't love their country.

@barjoe You sound like a trumper. The patriots are the only people who attacked the capital is that right? I can't be an American unless I say the US is the best country in the world? Well then you should look in the mirror because if you like the violence and the shooting up of schools and 30% of the country being racist then more power to you.

@K9Kohle789, @lerlo I'm not a Trumper. I'm a proud American and a proud Democrat. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. Loving my country doesn't make me a Trumper, I hate Trump and his supporters, they don't define my country. There's a difference between patriotism and jingoism. I don't wrap myself in the flag like those who stormed the Capitol. There are a lot of people on this site who are Anti-American, international members. I always stand up for this country when when they trash it. I am annoyed when I hear it come from Americans. The original post asks for opinions. I gave mine.

@barjoe you should stick to your opinions then and not give opinions about other people...tell me which part of my post was wrong? oh yeah for you # of innocents killed and literacy rates dropping still make us the best country because, like trump who could shoot someone in Times Square and get away with it--this country can do no wrong in your eyes.

@lerlo I didn't say America can do no wrong but some people think America can do no right.

@barjoe maybe you should go find them. My post has nothing to do with that at all

If "the United States ... let the world "(sic) then does that mean it's owned now?

Look up the word typo and see if that means you're now a typewriter

Singapore based on the high scores in math, science, & reading. I couldn't find the original graphic that factoid was based on, but this will have to do. China was competitive, but they have obvious lifestyle issues. Also, China is very badly overpopulated in a country that has lots of desert, vertical mountain ranges, minimal arable land. Singapore is not much of a country either, so what is the balance?
